Airbox mesh explained
I believe i know what the airbox mesh does for the rx8.
Have you seen those fancy fountains that shoot small "glassy beams" across the water, they acheive that by the reducing "turbulance" in the water (as opposed to blasting it out of a tap, messy, quite airated, etc)
And firefighters had problems in the 40s with new york buildings getting too high and they couldnt spray the higher floors from the streets, the water would "particalise" and disburse, so they came up with a device to make the water less turbulant, and it would extend the flow of water distance wise for a few reasons, like you could displace more liters/per minute out of the nozle and it wouldnt disburse as early.
These 2 inventions have the same internal, its just mesh screens, it can make the water (and air) more "streamlined" and flow better (more smoother and consistant) and faster, so at that point in our air plumbing it doesnt matter that the sides are ribbed, the air is near perfectly "good flowing(?.. Insert better word)".. And the air going past the maf wont spike or have a lack of air at any point in time.
Since ive found out that theory im dead set on putting it back in my airbox, (since the scale that the turbulance isnt only reduced 30 or 40 percent, its something like 800%)
So, embrace your mesh, i could see inconsistant spikes and low points of my engine load/maf gauge, it should be at 100% at full throttle, and especially in 1st gear, it would drop 6 or 8 percent for a 4th of a sec a few times throughout the rev range, which is literatly 6-8% horsepower down, potentially 20hp drops a few times in a revrange, non existant since i re -installed
