Hey all, first i want to say when it comes to cars I'm completely inexperienced now my ?. I was at the dealer today because my x8 has been having some problems. First let me back track. A month ago my car did not start at all so i had it towed to the dealership after about 4 trips in a week they finally said it was the purge valve. OK a week later car acts up again really bad cel flashes car was getting no fuel i was pissed . anyway i take it back they then say i needed to replace two coils ok great that gets done, so car seems fine then today i take it back for a lube job and to tell them my cel came back on car just not right. Now my warranty is up after all the crap i went through with this dealer they tell me i need a new air pump its going to be a cool 900$ plus . I'm like see ya . SO I NEED HELP any suggestions am i being scammed. is the air pump important should i get a second opinion. Sorry for the long post I'm just frustrated.thanks

Take all your work orders from your current dealer, take the car to another dealer, and ask them if, considering the fact your car was under warranty when the problems started, they could fix it under warranty. Tell them your current dealer was unable to fix the problem and you felt they were just trying to take your money.

toss the air pump. it's worthless.

if you really wanted to replace it, post a wanted thread, you should be able to get one for $100-150 range.

I believe Mazsport sells them for ~$400 new as well. If you live in an area that doesn't require state inspection/emissions testing you don't need it anyway.

Air Pump

Hey guys just a question about the air pump.I took my x8 to the dealer because my CeL had come on , after a diagnostic they said my air pump needed replaced but it will cost me 900$ is this normal pricing? how important is the air pump? and if i drive for awhile without getting it fixed can i do any damage to the engine etc.. Ive had a lot of issues with this dealer and now that my warranty is up they find this problem hmm makes me wonder..

It's not the airpump.

The airpump comes on for 30 seconds at startup, after that it's off.

The airpump is not the problem.

What codes are flashing? Find out or pay the dealer his $900.

When you tell us what the code is, we can tell you what the problem is.

No sarcasm intended, just trying to inject a little reality into your situation.

Code readers are cheap (mine was $80) or they will read them for free at PepBoys or Autozone - this isn't rocket science.

Put the effort in or surrender your wallet to the stealership - your choice entirely......
