i was experiencing similar problems with my tranny. high rpm shifts, especially the 1-2 shift, would cause it to grind going into 2nd. took it, told them during high rpm shifts it would grind. so here we are, 5 days and over 20 parts later, i should be getting my car back.

You go into second from third or first?

I have this same problem. No grinding noise, but very difficult (if not impossible) to get the car into 2nd gear (from 1st) at higher RPMs. After all the horor stories I've been reading lately...the transmission has become my #1 concern with the long-term reliablility of this car.

my Axialflow short-shifter solved this problem on my car

make sure you are pulling straight back and not straight back and to the left. It seems (at least on my car) if you didn't pull straight back the shifter would get into no man's land and the gear wouldn't engage.

What year is your rx8? Mazda had problems with early vehicles having a bent or cracked shift fork affecting 1-2 gear shift. Could cause gear grind or no shift problems. Just a thought.

2004. I haven't brought this up to the dealer yet, since it is only an issue at high RPM...I figure they will just BS their way out, since I have 4,000 miles left on my warranty. I suppose I will mention it just to get it on record in case the tranny dies in 5,000 miles. I am also looking into the AFE short shifter...just don't feel like droppin' the $$$ just yet.

I have the same problem too. I thought it is normal.

From 1st to 2nd shifting is really hard, feel like someting is holding

my shifter not to going into the 2nd gear. 2~3, 3~4, 4~5, 5~6 is good, smooth.

Should I go to dealer to check it up?

so, most of you guys have solved this problem at dealer?

or solved by short shifter?

What if dealer says it is normal? cuz my dealer is really...really...no good..

I had the same problem. Took it in to the dealer and they said nothing's wrong (big surprise). I thought that perhaps I was shifting wrong. Nope.

Here's what you do:
1. Look up the DIY on replacing your transmission and differential fluid with RedLine or Royal Purple. Do this after you have a good 4-5 k miles on the clock (don't know how old your car is, but it's good to let a transmission "work in" before you replace fluids). I did this a few days ago and what a difference! Totally solved my problem.
2. Ask the dealer to fix the clutch problem. There's a service bulletin out for the clutch not engadging/disengadging.
3. If it's still not doing what you want, replace your clutch line with a stainless steel line. Mine cost 31 dollars shipped from corksport.com.
4. If you do all this and STILL have problems, get a short shifter. You may want to get this regardless as it sounds amazing. I have yet to do this.

Ok...I will try from #1. My dealer would have said same thing that nothing's wrong. Anyway...mine has 9,000 mile and it''s time to change fluid. Thanks.

The RedLine fluids made only a slight difference for me. I changed them at around 30,000 miles. I'll have to mention this to the dealer the next time she goes in...just to see what they say.

I have this problem sorda... not really that noticeable though. Just a little bit of a harder shift into second and reverse is a PITA sometimes. I ordered the redline fliuds the other day; however, I've never used a torque wrench before.... so it'll be a new experience. Any advice on that? I assume it's like any other wrench... set the torque, and I assume it clicks or stops whenever it's tight enough. I've already read through the DIY.
