We are hopeless!!!!
Umm...
1) CVT's while nifty are simply too weak to be used reliably in a high-performance situation. I stand to be corrected, however if it was truely possible it would have been done by at least one or two major mfg's or race teams. I can see the allure of thinking that CVT's "keep in the optimum powerband" and the whole "infinite ratio" argument however I seriously doubt they will ever be used for anything other than fuel economy. Direct drive is a better alternative.
2) I also highly doubt that you will ever see a 6-speed CVT as a CVT has an infinite ratio and no "speeds" to speak of.
3) Ditching the AT and going to MT (if I read your post right...kinda hard) is probably the best thing you can do...however I would recommend trading the car as doing the swap will probably be more money and alot tougher than you imagine.

ok...for my retort..yes cvt's are nifty, thats why there will be one in the new evo X, how do I know you say?...OH i sell mitsubishis now and I know a few things. Did you really have to be a smartass about the speeds..lol if there were 6 "speeds" they'd come at ecu determined shift points which change variably depending on driving conditions, or at your choice per rpm shift point manually selected by you and speed determined by the relationship between the cvt and the engine. and finally I imagine you imagine that i know very little..., well you seem like a nice enough fellow but rest assured this wouldnt be the hardest thing ive ever done, or will do, ive done my fair share...its a powertrain swap. basically they are all the same, mounting points change,of course id need other things that are vehicle specific, but you dont have to spell it out for me i already know, lol...and it will still be cheaper than trading in mine and getting a new one....sorry about all that..lol

The CVT is going into the Lancer which makes sense as its the econobox and isnt going to be putting out the high HP the Evo will.

At the end of the day its easier to trade in the car for a MT and take the hit. For example you might end up losing $3k in the deal, but it would easily cost you $6k to complete the swap and work out all the bugs. Factor in your time as well which is valued at what?
The value proposition simply doesnt add up...its not a question of your skill...

seriously, though, I am trying to improve the auto right now, worst come to worst, I'll just jump fence and go MT, but for now, I really want to know what it can do, although I really want an auto with a clutch.........
I am looking for an AT RX8 in the Minnesota twin citties area that is willing to have a custom turbo kit installed for testing purposes with the option to buy it in Mid to Late June of 2007. I dont want any questions regarding the kit. Its strictly experimental at this time. We just haven't forgotten about he auto RX8 like everyone else has......Please contact only if interested in this and in the area, no inquiries about the kit please. Thanks in advance.

lol....but to find a pearl white touring with leather for 17,800 from my dealership...ohh it breaks my heart, if some dumb kid wrecks his rx8 MT anywhere near me im going that route, if that doesnt happen within the year, i GUESS ill get a new one.. i just fell in love with mine, but so is life, and ill let you know the transmission on the evo x when we get the first one in about a year or so
I have decided not to mod my 8 any more. Just will install my MS springs/shocks, get a front strut, and do the Cobb AP. After that, just sit back and wait for Mazda to make their move. Hopefully it will be a good move. If not, then upgrade to a MT 8 and mod from there... Patience is a very advantageous trait.
Sorry I missed your response...
Well you do know that without the ECU the car doesnt work...and the ECU is keyed to several independant components in the car which would need to be replaced as part of the immobilizer security system...
and the AT's logic and programming is in the ECU...which uses a completely different flash than the MT ECU...and you cant reflash it from AT to MT yourself...
and the MT flash contains logic for the MT engine bay components and expects to find certain things which the AT does not normally come with...you know this right??
I sure hope so...
Its either you trade out, or buy trade in on the next model coming out soon. It's your money ultimately...I just want to be sure that anyone with the fantasy of going from AT to MT knows that its not as simple as it sounds.
Its going to have the automatic manual 6-speed (option), or the cheaper manual 5-speed (standard). I could bet money on it.

I would think you just go turbo or S/C on your AT or just go buy an MT, as oppose to trying to do a conversion from AT to MT.
The other route is the torque converter issue. The AT can handle higher revs with a good tranny cooler and fluid. A good AT ECU flash and CAI/Ram Air intake should help a bit too (especially for the 4AT).
If the torque converter stall issue could be handled by PCM flash, that would be interesting. I think the point is to find somebody who can do the flash. I'm surprised that R-Magic or Re-Amemiya in Japan, have not gone that route considering they have RX-8 Autos. But, I do know that Re-Amemiya was tinkering with a torque converter solution. Also, it seem Americans have done more work on upgrading the power on the RX-8 than in Japan.
I just think some RX-7 Auto people have this thing figured out (or least a better handle on it) and us RX-8 people just have to find them.

hey im confused, are you saying the AT is limited at 125? If so, thats not true because ive hit 130 on a straight road ...not at a decline. If you are talking about the 4AT than nvm, i have the 6AT.
thanks!
thanks!
For what it's worth - I've hit 127 on a slight decline and I have a 6AT as well - I wonder if 125 is only consistant with 4AT's??
So the answer is get your AT's ECU flashed. Same goes for the MT as they have the same speed/rev limit. You have to flash the ECU to get past that.
we're not hopeless...just less Hopeful... Everything involves money, whether you have an Automatic or Manual. It's very possible that you can get an auto. rx-8 to 400 rwhp, but only with TONS of cash. And for all the M/T drivers that think it's funny to bring down the one's who drive an Automatic, keep in mind that this RX8club.com not M/TRX8club.com. It was meant for any and every RX8 owner.
I have a 2004 Velocity Red AUTOMATIC RX-8 and I LOVE IT! It's fun as hell to drive. And driving back and forth to work with all the traffic I have to put up with, I'm so glad that I have an automatic. It might be slower than the 6-speed M/T, but it's not slow.
The car is beautiful and the rotary sounds as good as it looks.
Even the owners of the M/T RX-8s complain about power. The only reason they talk so much s**t on auto. owners is because they want to feel better for having more power even though their RX-8s aren't as fast as they want them to be.
The fact is that nobody is happy with what the have anymore. If you have 200 HP...you want 250. Once you spend enough money to get to 250hp, you want to get it to 300+hp. It just never stops. Enjoy the car that you have. If you want so much power, why did you get the Auto. RX-8 in the first place? I'll tell you why. Because it's a beutiful and practical car. I've driven a 350Z. I've driven the Mustang GT. I've driven the Mivec v6 Eclipse GT. The reason I have a Mazda RX-8 in my driveway is because it's what I found to be the most fun out of all the other cars. Yes the other cars are faster, but I live in NJ where there are cops every 1/8 of a mile. So do I need a car that's fast in a straight line? A car that can get to 120mph. faster than the RX-8? No, I don't.
I see people driving around in Geo Metros w/ no back bumper... in old civics with wings bigger than their cars...or their egos...but all these people look so damn content with what they drive. They're happy with what they have.
If you want more HP, go FI. But risk the chance of blowing your motor out sooner and risk getting addicted to more and more power...leading to an empty wallet and whatever else...
Have fun with your rx-8. It's an automatic, so what? Doesn't mean it can't be fun. It had paddle shifters and a 7500 RPM redline. And enjoy having your car getting eye-f***ed everytime you pass someone.
It's a beautiful car. So instead of complaining about it, appreciate it and next time around...when you're looking for your NEXT car... keep the options open and do more research so you don't enp up regretting what you buy.
Thanks.

I think I broke my thumb last night karting getting in a quick fix...and I STILL kept going...
Empty wallet...loss of self-control...and continued abuse even when it personally hurts you...addiction??? Yep I gots it...
It just comes down to preference.
it does kind of suck... i love rotary cars so i cant turn down an rx8.
but then i cant really catch up to some of my friends, a honda s2000 (adding more to his car, maybe turbo or an all motor, he hasnt decided) and a stock mitsubushi evo IX mr. at least i could still keep up with my friends stock and lowered mazda 6, and the 2 hyphy trucks..

The s200 is fast, but the interior styling is very driver based. The evo IX's interior...well...it's a mitsubishi... enough said. The rx-8 interior is beautiful. After test-driving my 8 for the first time, the interior was the final selling factor. A passenger in an 8 (front or rear) can feel just as comfortable as the driver and just as safe.
The rx-8 is in no way, slow. There will always be faster. I've gotten over that. I just cruise and enjoy my car for what it is.
