Hesitation/Almost stalling problem

Hey guys,

Wanted to know if anyone has experienced this problem and what I should do. On my A/T 8 after it has been parked overnight once I let it warm up and begin driving I leave my apartment and come to a stop sign fairly fast. Every day for the past few weeks when I try to accelerate from a stop at that stop sign the car hesistates or almost feels like its going to stall.

You feel the car kind of lunge to get moving but then it chokes up like its out of fuel. I have tried just going easy and mashing the pedal to the floor, in both auto and with the sport shifter, but no matter what I do this happens.

After this it may do it at the next stop sign might not but then is ok for the rest of the day/night. Even while it sits at work in the parking lot for 9hrs or so.

Any suggestions, things I should be trying. I know if I bring it to the dealer they are going to say they can't find it because it may happen just once or twice. So far with Mazda service I've had to come on here to give them a clue on how to fix things.

If anyone has any suggestions that would be great.

Thanks

There have been a couple of other posts about this, if I remember right. They all seemed to lead to new engines. One question: Do you spend most of your time in low rpms, or do you get her up to redline fairly often?

here's one thread: https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...=auto+stalling

How do you know is fully warmed-up? There is a difference between the temp dial needle moving and the actual engine temperature... So I suggest you come back from work one evening - this way the car is really warmed-up - and do the "test drive." I bet it will not happen. So, it happens because the engine is not warm and it protects itself by cutting the fuel when you force it. Plus, the ATF is cold also.
I would not recommend you force the car when the engine is cold. It will need a new engine if you insist, as the housing will warp and coolant will start leaking (info from this site). Drive at least few miles before you push the car.

I drive the car in high RPM's once the engine is warm and the temp gauge is in its normal area. I try to hit redline at least once when I drive it. I have read about the carbon build up issues and know about hitting redline every once in a while.

Well before I put it in drive I make sure the needle has risen. The thing is I'm not forcing it. It doesn't matter if I'm just driving slow or if I try to accelerate hard, which I only did to see if it would have any effect. I like to wait for the actual engine to warm up before I drive it hard.

I wouldn't think that it would need to protect itself by cutting the fuel when I am not forcing it, I'm just driving normal. Could it be a bad sensor or something that thinks I'm forcing it?

Thanks for the link. My car isn't that bad but sometimes I worry about oncoming traffic and it shutting down completely on me or hesitating enough that I can't get out of the way.

Guess I will try my dealer, but I know they are going to say they can't reproduce it. If anyone has more tips please let me know.

Not sure if I made this clear but the only time I have tried accelerating hard was to see if it would make any difference. Thanks.

Within the past month and a half I have noticed hestitation on occasion in my 8. It also seems that idle (while in park) is noticeably rougher than before. In addition, at a complete stop, if I gently lift my foot from the brake and let the car roll on it's own (no acceleration) it jerks. It seems that when it's hotter, it's worse.

Anybody experience the jerkiness?

My issue couldn't be any closer to yours. It seems to happen when I turn out of my neighborhood but not once after that. The car shutters and at times feels like it's going to completely cut off. Once warmed up, I see none of these symptoms.

Bring your car to the dealer when you are having your problem and have a service manager road test the car with you in it. Thats what i did and now my car is getting fixed. Bad news is i dont know when i am getting it back.

I have not had this problem anymore since the recall flash. I hope it stays that way.

My10ae, I dont remember if i experienced the exact same issues you have with the flash your on. I did notice just a slight lull when i first started out in the morning, at the 1st stop sign. And i would not say my 8 was almost stalling. But if there was a slight lull in the mornings, it seems to be ok now. I have had the recall work done and should be on the latest flash "S" for us a/t's. One thing i have noticed in my gas mileage has gone to **** since i had it done. I was getting 17mpg. I turned off my cz unit which just made it worse. So i have been working on an optimum map for performance, as it seems to help milage as well, just a little , but every bit helps right. Anyway if i get a real good tuned map i could send it your way. If there was some way i could have got the heat pad for the gas tank and not had my car re-flashed ,i would have.

Cool

Spr Grn8:

Any good map you can pass along would be great. I removed my CZ unit and it helped my rough idle issue and "almost stalling" issue. Got the balljoint recall checked, no issue there. Gotta get my fuel tank recall done and I guess reflashed at the same time.

Once reflashed, I will put the CZ unit back in. I miss that great punch from 4K up with the CZ unit installed :D

Just a word from what i seem to be experiencing. If you can get the heat pad for the tank and not do the flash you might consider it. I seem to be getting a bit worse gas mileage since i had the recall done. I was running with my cz turned off after the flash to see if the mileage issue as due to the cz. Nope, it was just as bad or worse with out the cz on. Now im talking about .5 to 1 mile per gallon. I will do some more mpg testing.

On another note, i have been doing some cz runs and logging. Lately i havent been able to get my afr's for rpms above @5500 higher than 11.5ish. If i go above 18-20 setting in my .gsc map for the rpms above 5500 i throw a cel. If anyone that uses a cz ( A/T or M/T) can tell me what do they set their afr setting to for rpms above 5500 thru redline to get mid 13's, that would be greeaaat..

I'm actually getting better gas mileage (from 17-18 to 19-20). I guess it really is related to driving habits and exactly what the ECU had learned over time.
