First a Clunk now a Clank

Every morning pulling out of my driveway I would get the normal brake test or abs Clunk which I understand is absolutely fine. Lately I've been getting more of a Clank, and it happens only once in the morning, and it's more delayed than the usual Clunk which happens right away with initial movement. The new Clank happens when I let off the gas and apply the brakes 50 yards up the street from my house at the stop sign. It seems like it happens right in between letting off the gas and braking, and it only happens once per trip. Anyone else experience this? Is there an additional test besides the abs clunk? It definetly is a clank not like the abs clunk. My car is a 2005 AT.

I hope you're kidding? It doesn't happen in the exact same spot on earth, it just happens right after the first start in the morning when I pull down the street.

Does this clunk sound like a heavy duty relay or shutter closing? What is the abs brake test sound you hear. Can you make it happen or does it just do it after a certain amount of time goes by first thing in the morning or upon statrup?

Start by re-torquing your lug nuts (there is a TSB for wheel snap, which sounds like a metallic "pink").

Yeah the clunk has to be the abs it happens right when I put the car in reverse/initial movement first thing in the morning, the Clank is the new one and it happens right when I let go of the gas after the first acceleration in the morning,(car is already warmed up, and I never bring it above 4k rpms until 5 min after it reaches normal temp) but it doesn't happen after that. All these noises happen only once in the morning, almost like the systems in my car letting me know that they're waking up. The Clank i was thinking to be a transmission issue since it happens when i let go of the gas ( 2005 AT ) but it only happens once, then the rest of the day the car is great. The last time I brought my car in for service I was getting a noticeable metal scraping noise at 5k rpm's. I also had some issues with gears slipping into neutral and holding for a sec before making the shift causing the rpms to fly up then catch. I don't know if this is related to my new Clank noise when letting of the gas, but I wouldn't doubt if this is all a problem wih the AT. I'm also awaiting a flash promised by mazda 2 months ago that will apparently fix all my issues. This is what mazda told my dealer to tell me.

Is the clunk coming from a certain part of the car? Like the right front or left rear etc.. or does it sound like it could be anywhere from the front or rear? I had problems with a car that one of the brake calipers would stick until it warmed up.

how exactly would a flash fix a clank from a tranny? a new flash is out but wont do anythign for tranny concerns nor "scraping sounds". can you repeat teh sound with out moving- rev it in neutral and let it go? if so then try doing it with someone else reving and you listening under the hood/outside. if it wont do it in neutral then i say its still a tranny problem. because it happens in a drive gear. if it will do it it still might be a tranny or dif problem but it could also be starter or throttle body etc etc etc.

If I accelerate then let go of the gas, it makes a clank noise, I think it's when I rev up to like 3k or 4k rpm's in first gear, then when I let go of the gas it clanks, then goes into second gear ( full A/T mode and it only happens once after initial movement/acceleration in the morning ). I usually don't use manual mode till the car has been running for a while. The noise is definetly coming from the front of the car. It doesn't do it in neutral. I guess the flash was addressing the tranny, that's what my dealer said, and they supposedly talked to mazda tech/engineers. They also said that the flash was for my engine noise, they said it would fix pinging/knock, I don't know, all I DO know is that I never have put less than 93 octane in my car and always change my oil on time with sae 5w20. I don't know why they would suspect engine knock/pinging. Basically they told me if the flash doesn't fix my problems, then they'll replace the engine. I'd actually like them to start by replacing my tranny cause I think that's where the problem/noise is coming from.

there isnt a flash been born that will fix a mechanical clanking issue. ping doesnt sound like aclank and it wouldt just do it once. maybe its your parkign brake fully releasing. see if you can park once over night without using the hand brake. chock the wheels to be safe. if you dont hear the clank nexdt drive then you know its brake related .

where do you live?

No I didn't. I did notice the past couple of days that it only happens when I let off the accelerator. Right when I lift my foot off the gas pedal it makes a faint clank from the front of the car. When the car is cold in the morning I definetly notice it more. I never use my parking brake by the way. It also seems like when my car goes into second gear it's a little jumpy than before. Kind've in a good way but it still feels rough for an AT. I think it has something to do with my trans or throttle, any other suggestions. And ZOOM, that FLASH was originaly for my marbles in a can sound that i was getting above 5k rpm's in first gear. My trans was also slipping going into second gear along wih that sound. I have no idea what the flash addresses, but that marbles in a can sound is no longer there anymore. It started around 10k miles and got better around 11k-12k. Now at 14k miles I'm getting the CLANK when I let off the throttle.

All fixed, it was my transmission, NOT the brakes. By the way, mine WERE squealing like pigs, and they slapped on the upgraded pads and hardware, and man what a difference....so far. I also got the newest pcm flash and the car is running great, no more vibration with the AC on and when you put it in reverse ,also no vibration. Idle is smooth as ever and seems to be more consistent. The whole marbles in a can sound I think was bad gas "fake 93" from some **** gas station. Hope it didn't damage my engine too much, it had to be pre detonation of the bad gas cause it hasn't happened since I changed to shell v-power 93. I'm a happy owner once again.

I hear a clunk within the 2-3 seconds after take off. I test drove an 07' MT and it made the same sound. I am guessing that is normal?
