Why bother?

The amount of time/money it would take to make it fit is not worth it.

The turbo and intercoller is probably junk. 500$ for a turbo kit is crazy.

i say you print out the pics or make a list of what you get ....then take it to a custom performance shop and ask them how much....dont forget to add an int x for tuning, you never know untill you ask....but it probably wont work out....

Good choice.

The GReddy kit has tons of potential once the parts are upgraded. What's nice is you can do it in stages.

Knock off turbo, knock off blow-off valve, knock off wastegate, and cheapo intercooler and pipes that won't work.

Going FI isn't going to cheap, bottom line.

There are three things to have when modifying a car: Fast, Reliable, and Cheap. Pick any two, it won't be the third.

I think it's a bargain for what you get even if they are knock-offs.

don't get me wrong there is some serious fabrication you would need to do, more parts you would need to buy or make, but the parts are cheep if you have the skills.

It's not.

Once you get a turbo manifold, and do the work to get proper piping that fit, your cost will be at least what it costs to buy a used greddy kit. And you will still be using a crap turbo/wastegate/bov.

Considering what's in that kit, I'd say $500 is too much.

Apparently out off all the posters I am the only one who has actually used the ebay turbo, and can speak from the experience.
It is no garret unit, but the turbo in itself is not bad at all. Although this one specifically might be a little small for high power high RPM, it will work perfectly well at up to 10 PSI
I had run one for over 20 K and when taken apart, it was in tip top condition, except for the oil seal ring, which was kooked and stuck solid inside its groove, because of the oil drain issues I had experienced at the beginning.

You'd still need to do all the work associated with actually prototyping, and building your turbo system. (If interested I might know of someone who'll take that burden away from you )

The intercoolercooler looks small. There are similar kits with bigger coolers. You might want one of those. Or even consider sourcing them separately. May cost you less (look at the shipping cost!)

I can't remember. I had redone it a bunch of times so overalll, it has been a fortune
However I now have the first hand knowledge of what needs to be done, and what not.
That my friend is Priceless! For everything else, there is a Mastercard.

How do you know that, Vlad? I've used EBay turbos before, just not on the RX-8. I used one when helping my friend turbo his KA24 in his 240SX back in High school, and I've used two EBay turbos when turbo'ing a GSX-R1000 crotch rocket and a Harley Sportster 1200. Every single one failed within 2,000 miles or less. The one on the Gixxer failed in just 200 miles, and the replacement ebay unit failed within the next 1,000 miles. The Harley unit last longer just because the guy never the rode thing and very rarely entered boost.

I will say the situation worked out OK on the 240 tho because my friend was drifting/road racing the car and he was beating on it hard, so he was replacing the turbo every 2-3 races anyways, so it was fine to use an ebay'er in that situation. A Garrett or HKS snail would have lasted longer, but would have been replaced periodically anyways.

EBay turbos have their purpose, the main thing I don't trust is EBay wastegates. Very rarely will a turbo failure cause any substantial engine damage, but a failed wastegate can very quickly, before you even know what's happening, cause your motor to pop. I would never use any kind of ebay wastegate.

Dave, I know, because I actually disassembled and rebuilt one after having it in the car for over 20K. I didn't know of you using ebay turbos. I thought you are more of a straightforward, "sticking to name brands" moder. You so disappointed me I am J.K
I don't know what to say, man. Could it be that you boys were pushing those units WAY outside of their specks, whatever that might be? I have a friend down here who says "I don't give a **** about the efficiency, i just like a fast spool, lots of boost, and the sound it makes when it pings" (in reference to the sound of an over spun turbo) he runs them at close to 30PSI in his talon and changes turbos every now and then, complaining that they are crap.
Like you said they have their purpose. and for the purpose of an average boosted 8 at 10-12psi it is more than sufficient.
Wistgates, I couldn't agree more. And so are BOV. I have failed 2 type-RS BOVs already.

A little tip to OP if you are planning to use an ebay BOV - before you put it on, open it and thoroughly lubricate the membrane with some vaseline. The reason they fail is because the membrane rubs against the wall of the housing and the piston, and wears thin, eventually developing a leak. (usuallu about 6 months for me and it is gone)

Hmm. Maybe you got REALLY lucky with your turbo, or maybe I got crap luck with all three I've used. For the Gixxer and the 240 we mapped compressor and turbine maps for both and in the case of the Suzuki we went with a popular turbo for the horsepower he wanted. The Sportster we didn't bother with compressor maps since it was more a build on a whim project and he never rode it, so it didn't matter. It was a little big for the application, tho, but it was never surging.
