oh ..... same deal with the RX8s that came here.
I'm careful about not abusing the gearbox so haven't had any failures so far in over 100,000 miles turboed. I don't do burnouts and avoid nailing the throttle in low gears if I see rough tarmac ahead.

Yeah because you’re pussyfooting around. This shows how much more beefy the PAR straight dog-ear gears are for abusive/competitive purposes

well it’s mine to repair now and swap into a 5-spd RX8 box.

well as best I can tell after searching the web for more hours than any sane person would commit to, they must have never offered a paper/book version of the RX8 5-speed “R15M-D” transmission workshop manual. There’s a CD/online version out there, but it’s a pain to work with, though I can probably convert it into a printable pdf version with some effort.

I’m a bit reluctant to rely on the FD3 RX7TT version since the synchros are upgraded/different. If anyone knows otherwise I’d appreciate the information.

Finally found it, these are the transmission service manual changes to the RX8 (R15M-D) 5-speed transmission and are in addition to using the FD3 RX7TT (R15M-D) transmission manual

sorry, #14 should be listed first in the list.

I have the JDM RX-8 5-speed and I'm looking to replace the oil seals. Will the FD RX-7 5-speed seals work (front: H501-17-103, rear: R501-17-335A), the RX-8 6-speed's (front: Y601-17-131, rear: same as FD), or other?

I can’t say with 100% certainty, but it’d be my expectation that they’d be the same as the FD.

The front seal cover on the 5 speed is different than the Aisin S1 6-spd.

Dōmo arigatō!

I’m guessing the clutch fork and clutch fork pivot would be the same as those in the 6-speed RX-8 since the bell housing was built to install the gearbox in an RX-8.

Anyone with any experience?

As far as I know they are the same. If you need I have both in the garage and could check at some point

pretty sure the fork on both the 5-spd and 6-spd RX8 versions are the same. FD3 is definitely different since it had a pull style clutch rather than the RX8 push style

Are there any differences in the rx8 jdm transmissions, or any in particular to be on the lookout for? I see some sites listing transmissions as 4 port or 6 port, not sure if there really is a difference or if it is just the websites.

I've been looking to upgrade from my 3 junk 120k mile frankenstein stock transmissions, that all seem to have issues with 1st and 2nd.(long story wasn't me who junked them) At some point I plan on turning one of my cars into a turbo setup anyways and from what I can collect it seems like the jdm 5 speed is the way to go. Thoughts on temporarily pairing the jdm 5 speed with a S2 diff for an NA build or stay with the S1 diff?

they should be on 4-port engines only.

it’s pretty easy to distinguish between the outer appearance of a 6-spd and 5-spd, but there were a number of places that refuse to provide pictures of the actual trans prior to purchasing it. I’d steer clear of those places, or at least I refused to do business with them under those circumstances. One had multiple transmissions listed with a $400 cost difference between them, but could never explain what the actual difference was between them. They lost my business too. Those kind of games generally indicate they’re trolling for suckers imo ...

Yeah I've been waiting to see if anyone posted one on here for a while now, but keep checking random sites to see what is posted elsewhere. I saw mazdatrix lists a new 5speed for like $3200 but I'm not about to drop that on a car that could probably sell for that value.

I picked up a nice one at a local jdm shop for $340 cash on the spot.

it was listed on an auction site for about $500 shipped. I saw they were local and went in person to negotiate a deal. Just happened to have that amount of cash in my wallet.

Somewhere in that range is about what you should expect to pay used, but it may depend on your location relative to shipping one in.

Yeah I live up in New England (NE US) so even basic rx8 parts are kinda out of the way to get. I saw a jdm 5speed for sale on JspecAuto and Nengun, but sites like these seem pretty sketchy.

Edit: I ended up talking with JspecAuto and got a trans from them for ~500$+200$ shipping. Jspec had pics of the actual trans they sent me. Came with the 4port's flywheel+clutch assembly + slave+ an extra upgraded 2.7hp starter. The trans was in disturbingly clean condition. All gears working. 2nd's synchro is not smooth, but better than the three rx8 6 speeds I have laying around with junk synchros(previous owners/junkyard) Reverse is 10x cleaner to go into compared to the 6speed. On a rebuilt 6port S1 NA, the new gear ratios feel much smoother across 1st-3rd. I don't find myself shifting early out of first every time anymore. Spending a lot of time planning out steps to a turbo --> rew build.

Hey guys, I dont know if eventually anyone with big power tried the RX8 5speed manual but from my understanding and after an examination of an RX8 5sped box, it should be weaker. I don't know by how much, but to my understanding, in order for mazda to implement the 3ple cone syncros on the gears the narrowed them, thus 1st 2nd and 3rd on the main shaft looks like they are narrower than the FD's. In general, Narrower gear teeth = weaker, if I understand correctly fds box has double cone.

4th and 5th are exactly the same as nothing changed there.
The corresponding gears on the secondary shaft looks the same width which is very weird because if they didnt do it for the syncros why norrow down the main shaft gears and not the secondary shafts.
I cannot be 100% sure cause I dont have an FD box to measure and compare them and my assumptions are based on what I can find on the net.
So if anyone here have one laying around please take some detailed photos or even measurements.

For the sake of it

This is how 3rd(left) and 2nd(right) looks like in the FD box. Pay attention to the gap between the engagement teeth and the gear teeth on both gears. They are pretty close.

And here is how they look like in the RX8 box. Notice that the gap is much wider, I would say almost double and have oiling holes to the syncros and the shaft bearings.(same applies for the 1st gear). Thus in order to widen this gap, they had to narrow down the gear teeth.

And here 3rd and 4th

Missed this, thanks for posting this information

There are a number of people running the RX8 box on here with elevated hp, most of them are with REW swaps in the Rotary Swap forum area. Did you try to do any comparison on whether the case is different between them? Because the issue is usually more about the case flexing leading to gear failure than the gear itself (usually 3rd gear).

I know Stokercharged blew out the 3rd gear teeth on one at what I’d estimate to be in the mid-500 whp range (~400 ft-lb below 5250 rpm is more applicable). That will soon be addressed with swapping to a Nissan CD009 (370Z) 6-spd transmission.

I was having an email conversation with someone about JDM vs. EU 5-spd and the different 5th/OD ratios. The gearsets appear to be available if ordered from Japan. This is info I found on amayama.com looking at the S1 EU and S2 EU parts catalogs, but the ratio teeth count can’t be confirmed without ordering them. So maybe some risk involved if you want a taller OD gear on the JDM 5-spd that came with the 0.806 ratio:

.

0.762 RATIO

.

.

0.719 RATIO

.

.

However, my expectation might be that the FD3 0.719 5th gearset may be a direct fit. Those can maybe be found cheap on RX7 Club from somebody having swapped it out. Still some risk on whether it fits or not.

I bought a kit and new trans several years ago, just sitting on it until I get the Strokercharged REW-RX8 going again. Working on the new low-mount turbo manifold at the moment.

think there is one more on here for a 20B conversion. We both have the Careless kit that was a one-time group buy on RX7Club. The latest kit from Fisch Racing Tech is nice. For the FD they have a nice trans and diff PPF delete supports to go with it. I asked them to consider it for the RX8 maybe 1.5 years ago and was shut down pronto; no interest at all. If they did that it’d be the go-to RX8 manual trans conversion kit; either turbo or NA.
