Question: Leaking noise from turbo area

ok, so i've had my greddy turbo rebuilt a while back ago, maybe a year ago.

Recently, I've notice a leak noise coming near by the turbo. I hear it when I am reving and driving it, but I only hear it when I first start my car, so maybe about 3 mins later then its gone.

After around 3 mins no matter how I floor it or rev it, I won't be able to hear that noise again. I hear it even I start it when the motor is still warm, lets say after driving for 30 mins, and I parked for 15 mins, I still hear it sometimes after I start my car.

No boost leak or any problem, the car drives fine. What could be wrong.

Please let me know what do you guys think.

thanks for reading.

Sounds like you have a leak from one of your exhaust flanges....it has happened to me before...the reason it goes away is because when you exhaust gets hot, it expands and closes the tiny gap that is making the noise...as soon as it cools off...it comes back...

Check all your exhaust plumbing.

What is your vacuum at idle? I ask as I have an issue I am trying to diagnose myself. Does it change when this sound changes?

I will mention that when my bearing went in my greddy (prior to rebuild) the sound that it made sounded like a boost leak. BUt it was there all the time.

oh..and i had the turbo manifold replaced half a year ago too, my old one was crack....do you think it could be leaking from the exhaust manifold to the cat pipe?

It could be and it could also be on your downpipe.

Its probably hard to tighten it but you can use a 1/4-3/8" hose to find out where it is...just grab about 3-4ft of hose and hold one end on your ear...and run the other end around the turbo to manifold, manifold to engine and downpipe to turbo/exhaust joints and it will magnify the sound when it goes over the leak. You will find it in no time....pretty good Old school trick, works great and is usually better than trying to get to all the hard to get bolts without figuring out whether there is a leak there or not.
