Plans for porting need some help about tunes

I just want to give the engine a minor upgrade and decide to go down the porting path.

I am gong to get it street ported because I want to maintain a high amount of reliability and pass CA emissions.

I have a few places because I live in LA to get it ported and is lapping necessary? My engine only has like 20K miles on it.

Lucky 7 racing
Racing Beat
JRX rotary
Rotary Power
Tri Point
MazdaTrix
Racing Beat

gong to compare prices for porting but all these are very good shops.

For a tune I am thinking between Racing beat Rev3 out of the box tune for 300 or get a cobb access port for for 500 and spend another 400 for a tune. I am sedding with RB tune for 300, what would an extra 600 dollar get me?

I would save my money personally. Not worth the time or money. You will only get 5HP or less. Most likely less.

Why not just get a brand new Accessport from MazdaManiac which includes tuning for $600?

I think 10 to 20% gains are reasonable to spend 2500 and from the ported dyno that seems like the increase. Good Suspensions cost just as much as a porting so I consider it a good deal. The one that comes with a tune is still not dyno tune it is like a half between generic and true custom. I just want a better driving feeling with increase reliable power.

Okay whatever floats your boat, if you think that looking at the logs on an AP while the car is on a dyno vs. when its driving on the street is going to make a difference then that's fine I guess. Also sorry to burst your bubble but you will not see anywhere close to a 20% gain in power from just porting. Maybe if you did a full motor rebuild and bought pretty much every bolt on you can find that adds maybe 2 or 3 horsepower a pop, you would see a 20% gain after spending about triple what your budget is.

Doesnt dyno tuning normally come after a good street tune?

the issue is that very few can tune the rx8 motor, even fewer have a way to get the tune to your ecu..

With the right engine builder, the right tuner, and the right mods, you can definitely get a 20%+ HP increase to the wheels NA. Whether that is worth the money spent is entirely up to you. A few people have put down decent numbers on the dyno and on the tarmac (which is really what matters) naturally aspirated. You can surely feel a 30HP increase on an NA RX-8.

The reason most do not see those numbers is just because they don't build their cars in a methodical method, they just slap on parts and hope to get there.

Go look at WTBrotarys dyno sheet (268HP on an engine dyno IIRC). I would bet my left nut that when finalized his car will give my turbo (at 5psi) RX-8 a good run for its money. Teams car would as well.

Not quite that much but definitely lighter. Actually that reminds me, I should weigh the Greddy turbo kit.

I have a greddy kit under my bed. It's missing the maf housing (which won't be used anyway) I'll put it in a bin and weigh it when I get a chance.
