OMP adapter solution for top mounted turbo

OMP adapter solution for top mounted turbo

I was wondering if there is anything that can be done to use an OMP adapter for top mounted turbo kits like the SFR, PTP and Esmeril. Maybe a braided line that can take the heat from the exhaust manifold?

Do all the people that have these turbo kits not run synthetic oil?

I use heat reflection tape from DEI to insulate the OMP from the turbo down pipe. I also premix gas for a safety measure just in case the OMP quit working.

My car takes quite a few cranks to start since I started using premix and I wonder if premix causes hard start issue. Car pulls 21 in hg of vacuum during idle and it running on Esmeril Apex seals. I read somewhere in Racing Beat Catalog that premixing may cause the engine prone to flood because it difficult to start. Is this true? I runs Esmeril Coil/new plugs (NGK BR8EIX for Leading Plugs and NGK BR9EIX for Trailing Plugs instead of stock plugs).

Heat reflection tape? That's the solution?

I don't have that problem and I premix 8oz for ever fill up. I use Idemitsu rotary oil.

Lucky - did you start using premix with the turbo? or before/after? It might just be that the Esmeril seals take a couple spins to make proper compression. How's your fuel pressure during cranking? Generally, I would consult with Chris about any issues you have. Premixing shouldn't impact your starting.

Back on topic: do all of the top mounted turbo kits have the same issue? I think someone had to take it a step further and alter a wiring harness because it didn't clear the header on one kit. If it's just heat, good insulation should work. That area of the engine bay will always be pretty warm with just the stock manifold so the components should put up with some heat if you can control it.

I started premix right away after the engine was rebuilt with Esmeril apex seals. I didn't premix before the rebuilt and it starts quicker. I don't remember what is the oil pressure is. What is the normal range? Could it be the plugs since these are colder plugs.

The turbo down pipe has some room for the OMP on mine. I don't really notice any different in heat under the hood with the turbo(turbo was installed during the colder month before fall season). I don't get into boost all the time and the weather is cooler here in MN. I am still running stock radiator but with Mazmart water pump and cooler thermostat. Fan never turns on after I shut off the engine. And I do have racing beat flash on my ecu which turns on the fan earlier than stock setting. I think the fan only turns on a few times on hot summer days driving prior to installing the turbo.

The heat OMP experience should be not much different than with stock exhaust manifold. It always very warm down in that area anyway. The heat reflection tape does help. It reflects radiated heat away from the component but it won't help with the temperature inside the hood. However, I cut the undertray to create a spoiler to scoop air into the radiator (intercooler block 80% of the opening area where the air flow to radiator) and this should help a bit with removing heat from the OMP area. This summer I will mod the hood and raise the rear of the hood up a bit for heat to escape from the engine bay. This should help too.

As for premix, I am currently finishing up Protek R and will be using Idemitsu rotary oil in the next fill up....that won't happen for a long while since I stored my car for winter.

I think he's refering to very localized temperatures. I'm sure you've never had your hand within a couple inches of the exhaust manifold while at full boost. It probably depends on how well your pipes are insulated as to how much heat you have to protect against.

My downpipe and exhaust manifolds were double wrapped with DEI heat wrap. I also have Boost Logic turbo blanket. These two really help keeping the temp inside hood down.
