Need help with forced induction

Hey guys. In a nutshell I've looked at several aftermarket performance mods to accompany my AEM cold air intake, and nothing really has the gains to justify the high costs. Such as a catback exhaust being around $600 to $800 and the gains being 6 to 8 horsepower...

And yes I've heard of the almighty Cobb chip but I just think my money would be better invested in forced induction. I know the major differences between a procharger, supercharger, and turbocharger but not the uber fine details. I'm also not familiar with all the different brands, such as the Mazsport turbos. Any help would greatly be appreciated. Couple things real quick:

Max horsepower is NOT my primary goal. I'm looking for a reliable and fun system first. I'm aware that turbochargers may produce more torque to the wheels, but I've heard the GReddy turbo can't supply enough air to the 13B past 7500 RPM. If you like it, great. But my last car redlined barely above 5000RPM and I quite like the high redline.

I'm leaning towards the Stage 2 C-2 Procharger. And yes I'm well aware that there are other systems that crush the C-2 in terms of power, but I like the fact that it's a constant powergain up to 9000 RPM and. Also since it doesn't push the engine anywhere near it's limit. I know that if you have your car tuned properly it doesn't matter what horsepower you're trying to get to, but I know that the more horsepower your car has, the more delicate your tune is, and all those tiny little mistakes that didn't matter at 240 horsepower become huge flaughs at 400 horsepower. If you know of a better system, I would seriously love to hear about it.

In general I'm leaning towards turbochargers and the procharger simply because I like the sound of a turbo RX8 rather than a blown RX8 and the boost control is nice. However if all turbochargers on the market limit the RX8's 9000 RPM redline I wouldn't hesitate to put a supercharger in. Once again I GREATLY appreciate any advice you give me and please DO NOT TURN THIS INTO A TURBO/SUPERCHARGER POWER WAR. My question is which system would be best for a daily driven RX8 who's owner wants the car to last a LONG time. Thanks much.

Yeah I like this. I will sit around here to catch the info.

Although expect a couple of people telling you to use the search button...

I have read around a lot of this but I am interested in deciding what FI to choose for my 8 too.

I find it ironic that your signature is:
Forget bolt on's on the 13B. I'd rather not pay $100 per horsepower.
Because that is what you would be doing in your decision with the procharger.

I'm sure there is some thread out there that I need to read, but I have searched and it always turns into people argueing about which gets you more power: turbocharger or supercharger. I'm not interested in making my car a racing machine. SO FAR my preference goes to the C-2 Procharger since it doesn't really alter the RX8 that much like the GReddy turbo would. I'd be driving the same car just with more power and same powerband. But again, if there's a system that fits my needs better, I'd love to hear about it.

Just the fact that you want a procharger proves that you did not do enough research.

And I suppose you'd tell me to go with the GReddy turbo kit? I'm not bashing the kit by any means it's just I've heard a lot of bad things about GReddy, especially their turbocharger. Something about needing an oil restrictor and someone on here needed to spend X-thousand dollars just to get it to work. So after using the GReddy turbo kit would you recommend it or suggest another kit? I didn't create this post to say GReddy sucks and their turbochargers are garbage. I'm trying to gather information from people who have experience in forced inducted RX8's. Telling me basically that prochargers suck doesn't really help me..

if you want to get the procharger, then get it. No need to tell us your decision, then have people tell you it's a bad idea.

If you are looking for useful info, this forum is the place. I have been pondering the idea of going FI for some time now. I have read every thread and have arrived at the fact that there is a multitude of options available. I too use my car as a daily driver and need the reliability and most every kit has proven reliability if you go with a conservative tune. When tweaks are performed, the kits become as reliable as the person performing the tweaks. Thus, my opinion in your case and mine is, the Greddy kit, with the MM upgrade. The tuning aspect of the Renesis has come quite some ways, and air flow has been conquered, for the most part.

I'm still open to any ideas. I don't even have $1000 saved up lol. So far I like the idea of a procharger but thats where my dedication to it ends. Other than more power and torque what advantages does the GReddy turbo have over the C-2? I'm not going to pretend to be an expert on this. Better powerband? Is the MM upgrade escential? Difficulty in installation? etc.

The info that I have read and observed on this forum has shown the Greddy kit to be a good kit to provide that additional power many of us desperately seek. Its reliability becomes jeopardized when its ability is pushed to the max, usually coupled with inexperienced tuners that leads to malfunction and detonation. But hey, I am not an expert neither. I just read and ingest the info and make my decisions. MM's upgrade is quite easily installed from what I have read.

GReddy turbo is OK. You must keep in mind it was designed for 6 psi, and if you stay there, it's fully functioning. If you increase boost above that, the engine eats the air faster than the turbo spools it, so at 7.5k rpm, you're back down to 6 psi. This sounds bad, but if you raise boost, the torque and power levels down low increase quite a bit. So it's not all bad.

The only flaw I'd really complain about with the GReddy kit is the turbo itself. The journal bearings are worthless. If you get the kit and use it as-is, you should expect the turbo to need rebuilding once every 6-24 months.

The MM turbo upgrade makes the greddy kit worthwhile. Real Garrett GT3071R with custom trims, water cooled, real ball bearings. It will outlast your engine.

I think if you want to go turbo the mazport turbo is pretty nice, if not the nicest out there. It is the right price considering all the parts that come with it.

The thing I have found out readin countless forums is that if you want to FI a car you have to be willing to spend money and do it right the first time including a good tune and you can have a good DD car.

THATS helpful. GReddy says the kit comes with a T6 turbo. I'm guessing it's the size of the turbo? I've also seen some companies use milimeters as a measurement too. Is that relevant to a desicion? I know that psi isn't really a good way to measure the performance of a turbocharger either. Like I said I'm no expert at this. I'm 19 and don't pretend to have the knowledge of someone older.

Locate the flow maps and compare how much they flow to get an idea.

Yeah I found A flow chart. Basically a big turbo running 10 psi still flows more air than a smaller turbo at 10 psi. Which I'm guessing is what the MM upgrade does. I watched a couple of your vids too. Suddenly a 7500 RPM redline doesn't seem so bad lol

Keep in mind that you need alot more than just a turbo kit. You will need a BOV, gauges as a bare minimum.

Other mods that would compliment FI would be the Mazsport ignition solution, exhaust system, clutch/flywheel, Cobb AcccessPort.

Here is a crazy idea and it worked for me. Try to contact each of the individual retailers you're looking at purchasing from. Basically ask them to give you the sales pitch and why you should buy there's. Ask for any and all types of upgrades they give, and what other items you should also purchase.

From my own experience doing this I found it actually quite surprizing yet at the same time disappointing when a retailer says that you should up-grade the exhaust and whatnot, being something that they don't sell themselves. When dealer "x" tells you to buy something from dealer "y" to compliment their own systems. You'll also through this be able to better understand the company in which you will potentially buy something. This also goes to show you how much support you can get after purchasing your hardware. I've tried again and again to talk to someone from certain companies (((cough Greddy cough))) and with the only way of contact being through e-mail being ignored/brushed away it gets very upsetting. Its nice to know that you'll get support if some problem does occur. Its not only just the product but the customer service as well!

My personal favorite is when numerous companies back a certain product from other companies. I've had a couple different recomendations for certain exhaust components, Clutch, and a couple other things. So by all means call these companies up, and ask them for some know how! Some will be very willing to help, and can walk you through the whole process and even tell you the final $$$ that you're going to have to put down for a final project withing your specified requests.
For myself the worst response was from Greddy. Such a big company but such bad customer service. I've had requests for information about exhaust systems, Forced induction, and have never had anyone respond to anything.

On the other hand the most friendly so far has been Scott from Mazsport. He's walked me through quite a bit about his products and why I could (not should) buy products from them. I gave them information on what I would like out of my car and they give me options that I can play with.

But once again don't take my word for it. Go call them and make a judgement for yourself. This way you hear comments from people on the forum and the buisness themselves. Build your own opinion and go from there!
