TX Longest Boosted Road Trip

Dear Boosted Members,

I am a few days away from having my first boosted car and I couldn't be more excited to have a Precision Turbo T67 dropped in my 8. Since it's my daily driver and only car, I was wondering about taking road trips in it. What is the longest road trip anyone has taken in their boosted 8? Or what is the longest trip you SHOULD make in it?

Also, please tell me what turbo you have and any cooling mods. I don't have any. I plan to run Castrol 20W50 with about 2 oz. of 2-cycle premix.

Thanks in advance!

I'd be concentrating on sorting out all the bugs before I even thought about doing a long road trip.

I have zero plans to take any road trips. Funny thing was my girlfriend brought it up about a trip we are taking. She said we need to take her car because
1.) I don't want to blow it up on a 10 hour trip
2.) She doesn't want me in jail if some yahoo trys to race me

That got me wondering.

no cooling mods on a boosted 8 in TX? Good luck with that...

As for road trips: if the vehicle is mechanically sound, the turbo won't make any difference on long high way stretches in 5th or 6th gear.
It's the daily driving you should be worried about more as you'll see the lower gears more often. (ie; higher load, more acceleration, BOOST)

I have a few months to work on the cooling mods. That's why I'm doing the turbo now, since it's so cool outside. Any suggestions on good mods? Koyo radiator worth it?

I plan to take my car on a 1500 mile road trip to Cali towards the end of February.

Was wondering if you would notice! LOL

I will be visiting my mom in Norcal but maybe I can swing down

That would take my trip to 2300 miles.

I now regret posting this thread....

My other thoughts were starting the cooling fans sooner and increasing the oil from the OMP by a little bit.

OK - now laugh at that.

It has been shown by several members that fitting an extra radiator gives you the most significant effect on cooling . Where to put it for best effect has been the issue - there are a few options .

Cooling fans are used at low speeds. At highway speeds they shouldn't be necessary. The speed of the car should push enough air to cool ith off.

I was only kidding because of the 1500 mile boosted road trip comment.

Are there any good DIYs for adding a second radiator?

What about putting distilled water and water wetter in the factor radiator? Any advantage?

What about in hot Texas summer weather? Will that highway speed be enough cooling?

you should not ever have cooling issues cruising at highway speed. if you do, you have serious mechanical problems.

The Koyo radiator is known to be worse than the OEM

Oil choice, premix, OMP and fan changes all sound good.

Look into water pump, thermostat, controlling oil temps, and a proper radiator and/or secondary radiator

As far as cooling mods go...i plan on getting a front bumper with bigger inlets and a vented hood...Not too terribly worried about it till it begins to get warm though. When in Feb are you plannin on rollin to Cali? And what part?

I plan to be in San Fran towards the end of Feb. The timing of when I go will also be determined by how the Siskiyou's look. I'm not worried about additional cooling mods for a road trip in the cool weather at highway cruising speeds.

I have no problems with my stock radiator, although I've setup the first stage fan to kick in at 92c and the second at 96c. It's never gotten to the second stage. BTW this is with a 13bre turbo engine.

You should always use distilled water if mixing with concentrated antifreeze. Tap water is to hard on the cooling system of vehicles. Best bet is to just use 50/50. You mentioned adjusting the operating temp for the fans and adjusting the oil metering pump. I would assume you have the cobb? If so this is a good place to start. If you are interested in making the car more reliable do some research on the omp adapter engineered by Richard Sohn. I don't premix but do use the Sohn omp adapter. In this way I am only using 2 stroke to lubricate my rotor housings and seals. Plus I now can use synthetic oil with out being concerned whether or not synthetic oil is an acceptable alternative to conventional oils. I choose to use 10w 40 RP oil.

Thanks for the advice. I do have the Cobb, which is why I plan on making the fan and OMP adjustments. I have looked into and though about the SOHN adapter, but wasn't sure how much benefit there would be versus doing premix. I went with premix and just bought some Idematzu Rotary Fuel Lube. Any thoughts on that?
