Time to relax and make a post at last!
September 1st, 2007 by hymee
Hi all,

I find myself at last in a position to relax and make a blog post. It has been about 12 months since I really made any noise. This time last year I was busy arranging the Mazda RX-8 Club of Australia’s Nationals for 2006. Starting a new job coupled with an illness was serious enough to keep me from attending the very event I poured so much effort into!

Anyway, 12 months later, things are much better. I’m sitting here on a nice Cataraman anchored in the Brisbane River relaxing and waiting for the year’s biggest fireworks event, riverfire (http://www.riverfestival.com.au/riverfire/). It should be a great night, the highlight for me being the dump and burn fly past by a pair of RAAF F111’s. These 40 year old aircraft are still exciting enough to raise the hair on the back of my neck. It is a truly awesome experience, as anyone who has experienced it would know. Not sure about the carbon footprint of the dump and burn though!

In a little over 2 weeks I will be heading to the USA to help celebrate 40 years of Mazda’s rotary engine. I’ll be attending the 10th annual SevenStock http://www.sevenstock.org evet at Irvine, CA. As part of that event, I’ll be lucky enough to be a guest speaker, so this is something I’m really looking forward to.

I’ve been spending a lot of time, particular since the beginning of July, in further developing my RX-8 Supercharger kit, and I will be showcasing it at SSX It is going to be something special. I won’t be publlishing any photographs prior to my trip, as I have serious IP invested and need to take the appropriate measures to help protect it. One of these is that I must have not published or sold such items prior to lodging the paperwork with IP Australia.

Anyway, time to relax a bit more and enjoy the show in a few hours.

Attached were going to be a couple of pics from my cruise up the river this afternoon, but I forgot to bring my USB cable for the camera on board with me. Bugger!

Cheers,

Hymee

Interesting, stock box and cover fit.

Using a Mazda speed CAI or CAI duct?

No battery relocation?

What psi will you be running the SC at?

"Interesting". Wow - We've done lots of work to reach this goal. Was hoping for a little more than a plain old "Interesting"!

Those of us who can remember my 2nd prototype in Wildcards car will appreciate the work that has gone in to get to this stage.

That is the stock CAI you see, totally unmodified.
That is the stock battery compartment, ditto.

We've had 14 PSI out of the 2nd prototype. BTW - That was an instant 14 PSI from low engine speed. None of this lag rubbish :D

Cheers,
Hymee.

I'll have it all at SSX, and I don't plan on posting any more detailed pics until then.

I think I have seen all, or nearly all the FI solutions for the 8. Can anyone confirm that there are no others that retain all the factory covers, including the CAI and battery compartment?

Cheers,
Hymee.

Actually, of all the SCs, yours was the most intriguing to me. Particularly your focus on low end, high PSI, your team ups with Richard, and work on SCs. I also liked that you came out in support of the RX-8 Autos and you seem to have a good awareness of what many would like to see an RX-8 do... Pulling 14PSI, demonstrates you mean business.... You will be running with the big boys from lowend to highend and near that.... should make for a nice head rush daily driving experience....

Oh, I'm more than "interested" about this SC.

You were quiet for a while, so like perhaps many others, your return on the scene is a bit of surprise. I don't think anybody knows quite what to expect. But, so far, so very good. I'm definitely looking forward to more, and I think so are many others.

i think people are going to be very pleased and excited, taking out 2nd mortgages, selling sperm samples and /or blood monthly, stealing copper plates off of gravesites etc to get this kit. JK of course.
but a sc with 14psi? and stock airbox? whoa
And with Hymees rep it will be solid. I am interested in the engine management part among others.
what happened to the electric water pump? Have you seen paul's (mazmart )w.c. they have recently released? If not you need to take a look.
Wish you were in the states mate!

Hymee, I hope you actually make it to SS this time. It just didn't all come together properly last time. Don't leave until you find me.

Last time was sad, unfortunate, and regrettable. This time is real. I fly out of here 4 hours after I land in LAX on Wednesday

I'm flying back from LAX on the following Tuesday, but my direct flight won't get me home until Thursday!

Cheers,
Hymee.

Hymee - I'm sure you're aware that there are many less vocal / interactive forum viewers - like myself - following your team's progress. I've a bone stock '05 BB GT RX8. Love the car, but similarly looking for a robust / reliable system to increase tq & hp ...ultimately to enhance daily driving fun. The advantages of turbos not withstanding ...I lean toward the s/c technology b/c it avoids additional engine compartment heat, & better complements the "simplicity" of the rotary. I'm a NOOB to performance enhancement, ...but an engineer by degree / profession. I'm doing A LOT of reading & appreciate your allowing us to follow the development / design process via your posts, ...the positivity & "on-pointness of your thread, and your avoidance of making the "outrageous unsubstantiated" claims seen elsewhere. Keep up the good work & thanks.

Thanks for the vot of confidence JCB. You are right - there has been a **** load of work gone into this, over the last 3 years. It hasn't been 3 years full time, but has been on and off as indicated by my posts. Although it probably has had 3 years of my constant thought!

Hopefully everyone would have seen the post of the 2 early prototypes running. They didn't produce earth shattering numbers, but they did prove the concept was workable. Well - one number was good - we got around 100% increase in power from right down low - like 1500 or 2000 RPM or close to that.

The parts I will be bringing with me will be very close to final production. Even with all the technology of 3D CAD and CNC machining, there are still a few things that need to be adjusted slightly to get this all to fit properly. To be perfectly honest, the sad part is that after all this work and energy, the actual kit I will be bringing will essentially be hot off the mill, and wont have even run in an RX-8 yet. At least I have the runs on the board with the early prototypes in actual running, drivable and track-able form. Yes - it all a learning experience.

When I get back from SSX, there is still work to do. First off will probably be sometime running it on the engine dyno. Then I have a non-RX8 test car I'm going to clock up some decent km in before I put it into my proper RX-8. The test car will be similar to one of these:

That Mazda wagon has a naturally aspirated 13B in her

Anyway - counting down the days to SSX. And still making parts...

Cheers,
Hymee.
