Has anyone able to remove the fuel pump without using mazda special tool call SST? I tryied to knock it out with a flat head and rubber hammer. No luck. I'm afraid of breaking them. Is there a place I can buy this tool or any other way to remove these plastic ring? Please help. My 8 is running lean. Already upgrade injectors... Thanks!

 

Try sending a PM to olddragger, I think he has removed his more than once.

 

I also will have to replace my fuel pump. It has momentarily quit on me when cornering.

 

SST is just one of the special tools, sometimes they call a flat headed screwdriver a SST.

I read that part of the service manual like at least 10 times, You have to take some stuff out on the top part first, after that you can just lift the whole pump up.

and remember, Your fuel level has to be low low low low level or else the moment you take your pump out is the moment where the fuel is gonna be everywhere

you need the tool--it would extremely difficult to do it without it and it would be harder to tighten it after the new pump is installed. and if you dont get it tight enough it will leak.
Dealerships I know off are pretty good about lending the tool out if asked.

My dealer graciously lent me theirs a few times when I needed it.........

Take them some coffee and doughnuts....

 

I bought a bunch of new plastic rings, then cut the old ring off in two spots and pulled it off.

Re-installing with a screwdriver is pretty easy.

Even with the sst its still a pain in the butt to move. But helps.

sst 265 from the dealer
new cap 49 or so.

I think mazdapart sales the cap.

As someone mentioned. Make sure your gas level is very low or it'll start flowing out like crazy. Open the gas cap.

 

yes make SURE the gas level is below 1/4 tank! Since dealerships will lend the tool out I didnt try to make one. If you cut the ring bevery careful of the gasket---it aint cheap. Also it has to be tighten to about 90ftlbs of torque so it will not leak. So after the install put more gas in it and start and stop pretty hard for 4 or5 times to see if any leaks occur.
When you remove the pump make sure you take all the electricity out of the system (battery cables off and step on the brake pedal for a few seconds) beforehand. Remember and insure also that the ring is the only thing that turns NOT the middle piece of what you see! that is the top part of the pump assemblely and if you turn that then you will pull wiring and plumbing apart== not good.
Just follow th4e manuels directions about release fuel pressure etc.
be careful --anytime you work around gas tanks--turn up the careful meter a turn or 2.
