I guess since many people will not have to deal with the issue for a few years it's not on their minds. New Jersey gives NEW cars a 4 year inspection sticker so if I were to add a turbo I would not have to deal with it till 2008.

Yeah thats what I'm thinking. Hopefully by then they'll get it CARB approved, or I'll have an M4 and won't care.

In TX, emissions will begin Sept '05, but I've heard you only have to pass the sniffer if your car is 2003 or older. If newer, then you just need to pass the OBDII testing (no codes or CEL) plus the other stuff as normal... lights, plates, blah, blah

What doesn't pass?

I'm just curious what doesn't pass on your tests? I'm sure there is a fix for pretty much anything! Depending on what Turbo you went with! If you went with Greddy I'm sure a quick email to Greddy telling what didn't pass, they would quickly return your e-mail and let you know what you might do to fix the problem! Only problem I've heard so far on the Greddy Turbo is being a little careful with the O2 Sensor! Hope you pass the test with flying colors with the Turbo upgrade or move to MN just have to worry about getting around in the COLD...no test required! GOOD LUCK!

In CA, we have visual inspections. You'll look like an idiot if you call up GReddy to complain about not passing a visual inspection because of the turbo you purchased from them. Who knows if it will pass a sniffer. Guess we'll just have to take our chances, or worry about in 3 years.

Get your inspections done in a rathole. Bring a case of Coronas and a good ol'Benjamin Franklin or two and all your inspection problems go away.

yeah--they do have some unsavory shops--they hook up another car to the sniffer but input all of your vehicles info. viola.

I thought smogging in Cali, you are assigned a place to go, so that you can't buy someone off. Maybe that is supposed to happen in the future? I really don't know. Haven't had to get either one of my vehicles smogged yet. The Chevy is coming up soon though.

I'm sorry that I didn't see this thread earlier. As long as you still have a cat on your RX-8, you can "probably" take it to a friendly mechanic who can do state inspections and have it pass. They still properly inspect the car, but a cool mech would ignore the fact that the turbo is there. It can still pass since most states use the CAN bus to do the entire inspection. Most states only require you to rev to 3000 rpm, at that RPM the car is still under vacuume, so there isn't any boost. So your A/F should still be good to pass.

Of course, I am not worried about inspection at all. My next inspection is set for July 2008
