damn.. that exhaust looks way better than stock.

are you planning to make some new exhaust headers that flow better (so you can remove the sleeves and open it even more)?

Course.. if u did that, pressure would drop significantly.

You don't want to remove the sleeves. You just want to blend the port into them as good as possible. Removing the sleeves will create many new problems, especially the center sleeve.

As far as headers go, I might be working on something.

I'm thinking of having the entire exhaust end of my car redone for turbo.. ports openned.. exhaust headers created, high flow or no cat and then an actual exhaust if it's necessary at that point. I unfortunately really enjoy the sound of the stock exhaust and dont want anything raunchy sounding.

well, snoochie has volunteered, once again to be the guinea pig and let me do the big porting on his motor. i'm hoping for 185-190 this time, since the intake is opened up a bit more.

if i get started tomorrow, it'll hopefully be done this weekend (unless something else comes up), then dyno results with and without tuning next weekend.

i think we can hit maybe 220-230whp after it's tuned. WOOHOO!!

Wow. Looking forward to the results. I don't know if you've mentioned this, but there has been some talk about it. When you are taking out the engine, does it look like the exhaust manifold becomes the new restriction? Some have guessed that this may be why it's not making huge amounts of power, but I was wondering if this could be confirmed. Thanks again

i can't confirm it until i try a new manifold... but i do suspect it. it looks like it flow like ***.

How much would a better manifold be? Am I talking out my *** and no one has made one yet?

Some have been made but none were better than heavy *** paperweights. They never made much power and the general consensus was that the exhaust ports were just bad. RE Amemiya makes one I think, Knight Sports has one. Search for aftermarket headers or something and you'll find a few threads. Oh, I think the Kinght Sports and RE Amemiya are both upwards of $1000

After studying the exhaust ports as well as the factory exhaust manifold, I think I can tell why aftermarket headers haven't done much. The stock manifold does flow really badly. I can even fathom why it was done that way. However, if it still flows better than the stock exhaust ports, of course it won't hurt flow that much. When the exhaust ports flow better, it'll start to matter more. Once I get my engine, I'll test all of this to verify it. Right now this is just speculation.

It's a little ways out right now. Due to the primary pipe length, you can not use a cat. It won't fit. That's the only bad thing about it.

Hey Snoochie - did you get a piggyback ECU? I don't recall seeing any discussion other than what you should get.

Thanks for putting it all on the line for the good of the forum. Also thanks to guitarjunkie for sharing his hard work so openly. This is the most interesting thread to read on the forum (other than the SE region's track day at Road Atlanta thread)

Yeah I got the canzoomer with the canscan and all of the wiring and the cd with it. I picked it up from Fanman who got it from JasonHamilton.

Personally I wouldn't go bigger with the ports at this time. Bigger isn't always better. Try to get the most out of what you have before you try to go larger. What if going larger gets you less? It can happen! Play with the tuning, exhaust, and intake. Experiment in these areas first.

i will admit it if i'm wrong, but i really think there's more to be had--especially in the exhaust. the ports aren't humungous anyway.

Did you tune it? Any additional gains?

We didn't tune it with the street port because I didn't wanna pay dyno time when I'm not going to be using it. Plus I don't know what the hell I'm doing anyways. But the car is in Dave's hands right now... We're gonna go catless with the car down and see what it's like. If it's rediculous I can put the cat back on and whatnot. BTW is there a way that you can put a faux can over a straight pipe so that at a visual inspection I won't get a ticket for not having a cat?

If you get the results you want, punch out the catalyst grids and hollow out your cat and re-install it... looks like stock, only louder and faster : ). When my old Miata cat got clogged up, I hollowed it out like that for track days, and bought a high-flow cat for street use.

Sooo when I "punch out the catalyst grids and hollow out my cat" and by this I mean have someone else do it....is it the equivalent (sp?) of a straight pipe in all intents and purposes? Also can you do this Dave? while I watch and attempt to learn.

I just don't feel like having a 2500 fine for a visually not having a cat. I don't think the cop is gonna be like, "lemme jack that up and take it apart to see if you hollowed that mug out"

Thanks a load for the info this sounds like a good idea.

rotflmao!!!!!
i can do that, but i won't. you're gonna do it while i drink newcastle and tell you to work faster :D

but i'd rather not waste a perfectly good cat. somebody sell us a straightpipe.

Hehehe aight, is it possible to find an old unusable cat and get the covering and put it over the straight pipe? Just thinking up ideas.

sure... whatever your pleasure. i'd like to get the pipe made, but leave it off until after the first dyno with the new porting--that way i get unbiased results up on the website. after that, we'll have at it.
