EGT gauge

EGT gauge

just got a defi EGT gauge from a friend of mine.

now some people are telling me I can use the EGT gauge instead of the wideband o2 to see if engine is running lean... someone else on this forum is now throwing me off by saying that the EGT numbers are meaningless without the torque curve.

bottomline is i just want a gauge that'll INSTANTLY tell me when my engine is running too lean, so i can step off of gas before i do any real damage.

I know wideband sensor will do this, but since i got this for free i was wondering if this will accomplish the same task.

It will not accomplish the same task, you will still need the wideband but having both will help keep your motor safe.

Listen to colin204. You´ll need a wb02 sensor to read the afr and lambda numbers. The egt sensor can not do this although it can give you a hint if you´re engine is running lean or rich. A leaner mixture will produce higher egt´s and a richer mixture will provide a lower egt. But then again, you´ll need a reference point and it would still not be good enough.
Get a wb02 sensor. I myself use the zeitronix, it kicks ***!

Read again my friend... You DON´T need both, however having both will help to keep your motor safe. Too hot egt is not good you know.

got ya.

is there any 60mm wideband gauge you can recommend to be displayed next to defi BF gauges?? that way i can just replace the egt slot with the wideband one.

Not really that easy...
I´ve never seen a 60mm wb02 gauge! The Zeitronix unit I have has a lcd-display (the size of a visa-card) that shows the afr, lambda, rpm etc.

Here´s my setup:
EGT gauge
Boost gauge
Water temp gauge
Oil temp gauge
Narrowband o2 gauge
+ Zeitronix WBo2

The 5 gauges is for driving monitoring (the narrowband o2 gauge just shows 3 different status; lean, stoich, rich)
I use the WBo2 sensor for tuning and logging afr, lambda etc... Once this is tuned I don´t need to monitor it that much. That´s why I use the narrowband o2 gauge instead.

EGT gauge wouldn't be a great idea to use to see if its lean because it doesn't respond fast enough. WBO2 sensors respond very quickly, but EGT sensors don't give up to the second readings.

A WB won't tell you if you are pinging, an EGT gauge will. Although, with the Renesis, by that time the motor might already be done.

Yup, by the time the EGT tells you you are too lean, its probably too late.

watch your egt's VERY CAREFULLY if you have a zeitronix gauge. it uses the 7057 sensor--totally unacceptable above 700c

a wideband that uses the ntk, lsu4-6066, or lsu-11 sensor would be much more trustworthy.

thanks for all your inputs guys. i guess i'll leave egt for now and look to purchase a wideband with an appropriate sensor asap.

by the way, how does egt detect pinging exactly? does it suddenly drop in temperature at high boost?

No worries,,, I don´t use the zeitronix egt-feature. I have a VIVID gauge that reads up to 1400c.

nope, it still uses the 7057 sensor. they really don't like rotaries.

techedge makes a great unit. the more expensive plx is ok, and i'm happy with the turboxs unit i've been using the last ~9 months or so.

the egt is fine--i think it's just a k-thermocouple. it's the o2 sensor itself that has a problem with rotary heat.

i don't know why they say it doesn't oscillate the afr....the computer does that, not the sensor.

find out more info on that to see what kind of sensor it uses.
