Suppose I’ll have to ride around with my laptop to monitor my temps.. because too low is definitely not good. But with a stock thermostat this shouldn’t be an issue right?
Jake, It's certainly worth checking...but if you have OEM oil t-stats fitted, you s/b fine. IIRC the OEM t-stats open ~low 190s F. So that should set the lower range of your running oil temps.
My aftermarket t-stats is rated at 175F, but begins to crack ~165F, which works well for summer driving a turbo 8 in the south... , but essentially "holds" oil temp at mid/high 160s F in winter, which is why I needed to cover my coolers.
Btw...if going FI... proper gauges are a MUST. Twice now, once ECT and now oil T, gauges have allowed me to avoid potential trouble.
Used my home E85 filling station (see post #458) for the first time today and must say I'm impressed. I expected some leakage at the tank..., one of the hose connections... or the pump nozzle. Nada... nothing...not a drop. Barely even a whiff of it. Perfect.
Hopefully it'll stay that way. Though I will proactively replace the plastic hose clamps w/ metal worm clamps for good measure.
Transitioned fuel and tune to E30 ......buuuut started experiencing issues...
Car starts normally, but initially idles erratically. Had to feather the throttle to keep it from dying.
After about 2 min... idle stabilized enough to not require feathering the throttle.
Very strong / white fumes coming from the exhausts. Had to back the car out of the garage..it was so strong.
P0172 System too rich CEL was raised...afrs in high 9s.
Couple of logs and IM discussions w/ Brett......., and he nails it straightway It was precisely what I thought.........NOT....my MAF needed cleaning. Evidently, running boosted... is pulling oils from my air filter (which I have not oiled), coating the MAF...causing the erratic behavior. Couple blasts of MAF cleaner and all issues resolved...., purring like a big cat again. By all evidence so far likin' the taste of her new E30-lixir.

I think that unless you have a huge filter ..you will have to run minimal oil (much less than what it came with) in your filter to avoid a recurrence.
Well, I don't really have space for a larger filter...unless I change my CAI layout. Ideally, I need a higher flow &/or lower oil content filter of the same size.
K&N will custom make you a filter. Just take the model you have there, measure pipe extension to remove only what you need to attach the filter to it, and have the new filter made to the longer length by adding whatever you measured to create the new filter length. Had a long one made for my custom NA CAI, although mine was a straight diameter and not coned like yours. You could do it either way.
That filter looks to be same size as mine . I washed mine out and just run an absolute minimum of oil in it and it works fine . Obviously not as good at the filtration with less oil but I don't drive on dusty roads much plus I don't think my engine will last long enough for air filtration to be a factor in it's longevity ....if that makes sense.
Ethanol tester arrived...and it appears we've already transitioned to E75 winter blend here in TN. I wonder if the blend will remain at E75 or reduce further as ambient temps continue to decline?
This is the one I made up from two filters I had left over for my N/A car . With one of those only , it was strangling the engine somewhat . With two I gained an extra 10 odd g/s in flow ! So just shows how much filter you need even for an N/A
yes, but more area decreases velocity at the filter surface and and increases the chance for particles to contact the oiled part and become clung rather than pass through. It not just about flow restriction.

Yeah ...I realise that. I'm actually about to swap My NA and turbo filters around so I can achieve that with both.

I just happened to have them lying around so just used them up . But I agree with you ....(for a change lol )
Mine ended being 2x longer with a filter end cap too rather than blank end cap. Looks like you have at least that much room. So that’s 2x more area just by making it longer. It costs more than a standard one, but not that much. I had an extra made too just in case. Kind of helps to swap a clean one on and then take your time to clean, dry, oil, and let the other set. Then it’s ready the next time..
Think I'll try running the existing filter and simply cleaning my MAF more frequently...especially now I know what symptoms to expect.
But if I find it problematic then the K&N filter looks to be a good solution to get increased flow area. Agreed...it looks like I can minimally dbl the length and still fit the available space, if required.

Didn't realize these benefits... A custom filter order it is.
Too much restriction from air cleaner has a negative effect on a turbo and the system as a whole. Vacuum at the turbo means it has to do more work (creating heat) to achieve the same boost . Also , it can lead to oil being sucked into the compressor if it's bad enough. Just sayin'

Makes sense...as you & Team have both conveyed...I s/h considered it: if reducing flow restrictions post turbo is advantageous in creating a free-flowing system, then it stands to reason that reducing intake flow restrictions would yield the same.

Yep ...have a play with the matchbot software ...It actually has a bigger effect per pound than exhaust backpressure.
None of this mattered that much up until now ... IE as you increase boost it is rearing its ugly head !
On an NA car it can enhance throttle response as well. Which is why I have a branch fitting merged at the elbow with a second standard filter for 3x area increase ...

Took measurements this morning. I've max 16" x 5" dia space available. Custom filter order w/b submitted shortly.
Gotta be careful you don't end up with it being squished in there to the point of deforming it ...which will def happen if you made it that size.

i was just referencing the max. dimensions of the space as measured. But the two best filter options I've found are 5" O.D. x ~12" long., which s/b sufficient. But given your feedback...I'll find a 4-4.5" O.D. x 12" long which to both your points...will ensure it's not squished, and allow a buffer space around for breathing. Thx.
