mt 1973 mustang make 425 horsepower on the stock bottom end(new pistons @.30) and only a valve job and cam w/ an edelbrock daul plane/carter 625cfm on the top! Gobs of Torque and it only cost me 3000. Thats race prepped and balanced folks.
IT ALSO MAKES 14 MPG!!!!!!!!!!!!

NO, it sucks compared to a 178(if lucky) daily drive/cd/air/etc... car that spins and spins round and round and makes a great sound. Dont get me wrong my car is great and sounds awesome @ 560/560 lift but it doesnt have the same rotary intrigue that hooked me so long ago.
My point was that it only cost me 9000 including the purchase of the car. However, it could use a better paint job but otherwise it is awesome and complete

lol :D
here's a quickie ballpark rundown of some of the parts needed for a pj like this:
1200 ems
1500 turbo
fuel pump, injectors, regulator, etc... 1000
1000 custom manifold
500 wastegate
1000 full exhaust system
1000 intercooler and pipes
800 clutch and flywheel
engine build??? $2-3k
witht he rebuild, it's over 11k in parts..
prices +/- 50% LOL
then a couple hundred hours of labor.... anyone got that kind of money burning a hole in your pocket? let's do this!

but for real..i just read a swedish made vehicle that just claimed the outright speed record for production cars at something around 248mph. i can't remember the name of it right now..it's a god awful long name..

I saw the Ford GT at the LA Autoshow. Less than impressed. Even if the Ferrari F430 is slower I would take the Ferrari or the Porsche 911 Turbo S. For less $ the new Corvette Z06 (saw that at the autoshow too) or the upcoming Dodge Viper Coupe. Moe $ it would be the Porsche Carrera GT. The Ford's seats did not look very confortable, the interior was OK, not even stainless steel/chrome tailpipes. C'mon on a $160K car ?!?!

Back on topic. Here's how I'd ATTEMPT to get a Renesis to 500 rwhp. Notice the word "reliable" is nowhere in there.
Turbocharge it. Most definitely. Something large like a T76 or along those lines. Lots of turbos can get that power level so that part could be open.
Huge honking front mount intercooler.
Motec ecu which retains drive by wire. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Port it. I actually wouldn't go that large. The intake area is already big. I'd smoothen out the ports on both the intake and exhaust side. I also wouldn't get carried away on the exhaust ports. They'd definitely be improved alot though.
New upper intake manifold. I wouldn't trust composite at the boost levels that it would need.
Dowel pinned for strength.
Race clearancing on damn near everything.
Eccentric shaft and center housing modified for Guru Racing center bearing for added support.
Rotor faces dished out to lower the compression to 8.5:1 if possible.
Entire rotating assembly lightened and balanced.
Hardened stationary gears.
Different bearings.
Higher oil pressure.
Entirely redone fuel system. New twin aftermarket fuel pumps with a return line and fuel pressure regulator.
Kiss the emissions system goodbye. 3"+ straight through exhaust system.
New transmission. Full race puck ACT clutch. Lightweight flywheel. If you've got that much power, you'll get the car moving just fine with this setup.
The most important thing of all, tune it properly!
That's all I can think of off the top of my head. It wouldn't be cheap but it could be done. This would probably hit 500 rwhp.

i wouldn't go for 500 to the wheels. i bet 400 could be achieved on a stock engine, or maybe some exhaust porting. so the difference between a 400 whp motor and a 500 whp motor is $10k.... unless it's a race car or show-off car, cost to benefit...
and if fred and i had a kid, we could name him rotaryjunkie :D

I think the Bugatti Vayron is/will hold the title.
W-16 engine (GO VW!)
Quad-turbo
1001 HP stock
price tag? if ya gotta ask...
The Corvette Z06 is one of the few decent US-made cars- Mustangs (though I admit I like the new body style) are junk without mods, and I'll race my RX-8 stock against a stock Mustang GT any day of the week and twice on Sundays and win every time- I know- I've done it (they make more noise than power).
The Viper is cool too, but way overpriced, and it will fry eggs on the hood after a hard run.
Also, I did a little test which should boost everyone's confidence in our trusty little 8:
We know a WRX will beat us off the line, but three consecutive attempts proved that from a 50MPH start, the RX-8 will easily pull away from a WRX between 50 and 100 (start at 3rd gear, 5k RPM). It made me feel good to know that my little stock NA 8 could beat the stock FI WRX if you only had a little speed and RPM to start with.
