Do I have to? No.
But yours isn't an insignificant error.

There is the clutch - which is the friction disk - and then there is the pressure plate.
"Welding the clutch" would be a very different thing than welding the pressure plate just as eating the bar-b-que and eating the food from the bar-b-que are two very different things that might be confused by colloquialism.

.
Actually , I think you got that wrong Bwana .

A 'clutch' is actually the combination of a pressure plate and a clutch plate/friction disc .

A bit desperate, eh?

I realize that the generalization is to call the whole assembly - from the pedal onward - the "clutch". Even Mazda refers to the flywheel as the "clutch flywheel" and the pressure plate as the "clutch cover" (which completely belies its function).

But when you are discussing the parts of the assembly - which you have to distinguish since the effect on each part would be different in the scenario provided - the "clutch" is the disk.

Well, obviously the clutch disc. I wouldn't have even though of that as a question.

You might ask for something round with which to accessorize your fake Fendi, Gucci, or Vuitton.

My bad, I should have termed it, 'arguing.' lol

The clutch kit is the whole package. The clutch itself is the disc.

Excellent. Bring a copy of that with you to the parts counter.

The point is - nowhere is the 'clutch disc' referred to as the actual 'clutch' . The clutch is the mechanical device as a whole.

BTW Here is what you get when you buy a 'clutch' . Although if you really want to get picky it's more a 'clutch kit' than a clutch because it includes other parts like the release brg and alignment tool.

I'm not really sure what it is you are arguing, exactly. This isn't a semantics discussion, is it?

If you go into any parts counter and say "I want a clutch", you will get one of two responses. It will be either you will be handed the disc or you will be asked "Which part? Do you want the whole thing?"
I'll give you the possibility that they might even hand you the pedal!

I've bought several score of clutches over the years and, honestly, I've never given the parts of this discussion a second thought.

These are the parts I ask for and I've NEVER had a misunderstanding:
Clutch disk
Pressure plate
Release bearing
Pilot bearing
Flywheel
Clutch slave cylinder
Clutch master cylinder
Clutch pedal assembly

That is exactly the language I would use.
No one would say "Oh? Do you mean the 'Clutch Pressure Plate'?" if I just said pressure plate.
Nor would I get handed anything else than the disk if I just asked for the the "clutch".

If you go to a parts counter and ask for a 4-puck clutch, I doubt they would hand you a pressure plate.

Well if i went to a parts counter here and asked for a clutch i would get handed the whole clutch not just the disc . If I wanted just the disc I would ask for the disc .

Thought maybe it was just a NZ thing when you wanted to keep arguing the point - yet here I find on a US site this :

The ACT clutches are one of the most popular choices for the RX-7. The Street/Strip (Z65-HD00) clutch has an upgraded Street Disk with Heavy Duty Pressure Plate over the factory clutch
It's pretty unambiguous which is what if you ask me

You keep bringing up marketing stuff.
Just go to a parts counter and ask for a clutch and see what happens.

Like I said, I've already been through it many, many times.

OK : so the correct technical meaning of the word 'clutch' is the whole device but 'on the street ' the loose translation is that a clutch is just the disc .

Gotya .....

I mean, look at it this way:

If someone says "I burned my clutch", what part are they talking about? The disc. You can't really "burn" the flywheel surface or the pressure plate in the conventional sense of the term.
If you say "I slipped the clutch", you are really talking about the pressure plate because that is the part you directly move with the pedal, but I guarantee you that the imagery that comes to mind is a slipping, heating clutch disc.

In your mind, a "clutch dump" challenges the integrity of which part of that sandwich?
