Use good quality componets, (speaker, box, amps cables, ext.) a good ground, (close to the amp to bare metal)
a seperate power cable run strait from the battery that can deliver good clean power
should not mess up your system, Bose or none Bose....

Adding a system does screw up the cars electrical system if you don't know what you're doing. I've been installing for about two years now, and I remember when I did my first install on my car, my system totally drained my battery. It all depends on what size your stock alternator is and how much power you are running. I've ran anywhere from 1000W to 1600W RMS for just my subs, and then about 200W more for my components. I have about a total of 1800W running off my stock alternator and when I do turn it up, my head lights dim horrible and my voltage drops. (This is 96 Blazer with 105amp alt) You can check out my blazer if you'd like www.sounddomain.com/id/hardhitter2k3

Your parents are correct, but I highly doubt you're going to be running 2000+W like I do. You're likely going to be running a single 10, maybe a pair with around 500-800W max, and the RX-8's electrical system should be able to handle that. Use 4 guage wiring, or if you want to be safe, 0 guage and you shouldn't have too much dimming. Watch your voltage drop to be safe if it starts to drop. If it drops too low, you'll kill your alternator. If you have anymore questions, feel free.
