Sticking with the stock head unit?

I kind of want to upgrade the sound in my 8, but have found that a decent system could still end up costing like $1000. A big chunk of this price is the cost of a headunit and the metra kit.

I don't know the first thing about headunits, but from the way I'm looking at it, I don't need one. I don't need fancy GPS or ipod integration, or whatever. As long as I can control bass levels with the stock head unit (Which it can), I'm good to go and I'll just play CDs as usual.

So with that being said, are head units necessary when upgrading the sound? The reason I'm asking is because I never really see any aftermarket sound systems that are hooked up to the stock unit, and it just makes me think that, for some reason, it isn't possible. It'd be nice to just buy some subs and an amp and hook it up to my stock unit rather than buying a head unit that I don't really want. Can that work?

Again, I really don't know much about this stuff so this is probably a really easy question to answer, just need to know for sure before I start looking around.

So I'm pretty sure that's a yes

Or is it a no? Does Jedi getting an "MP3 CD player" have to do with anything? Mine isn't like that.
