Sport Package + Homelink, not possible?

Really wanted the homelink mirror (mainly for the autodimming and non-magnified look) but didn't want a moonroof.

Is there anyway to install this after the fact?

In my Subaru there was a plug by the map lights whether or not the mirror came with the car. Looking in there today I realized that wasn't the case with the Mazda..

Sorry if this has been discussed before, search didn't bring up anything helpful..

I know that there is a Homelink-enabled mirror available as an accessory for the Mazda 6. If the fitments are the same, you could probably make it work.

Well, just emailed mazda customer service..

http://www.mazdausa.com/MusaWeb/emailMazda.action

Everyone email them asking to make the mirror a separate option and hopefully they'll do something about it..

Thanks!

Well decided to order the homelink setup from the Mazda6. I'll give it a try this weekend and see how it goes..

Anyone know how to take off the A-pillar cover? Don't want to setoff the airbags by mistake..

Didn't work.. The clamp is too big on the Mazda6 mirror and it keeps wobbling.. I'm going to wait till Mazda comes out with a kit for the RX8...

Prices are outrageous for the RX8 mirror...

$320 for mirror only (no wiring)

for the 6:
$220 for mirror which also includes a compass that the rx8 one doesnt have and it has the wiring..

Ah... interesting...

...thanks for the reply.

Does 'no wiring' mean that we don't have the necessary wiring in the car with only the sport package? In that case, I guess installation is a pain anyway...

Yeah the wiring is not in the ceiling.. The mazda6 mirror kit i had came with the wiring that would go from the fuse box to the mirror.

Still don't understand why the mirror wasn't a separate option..

Yes, I don't understand it either. Just like why the sunroof is a mandatory option (at least in the US) with anything above the sport package, excluding all of the tall drivers (like me) from getting nice options due to the reduced headroom

Regarding the mirror: I think it shouldn't be required to run the power wire all the way to the fuse box... maybe we could get power from the map light which is very close.
However, if the mount doesn't fit, then this all is in vain... actually it's quite surprising that Mazda would design two different Homelink mirrors for their car line. Unusual.
It's a bummer that the Mazda 6 mirror does not fit. Would it be possible to get the mirror base together with the Homelink mirror from the 6 and install it in the RX-8?

Yeah, I'm sure you can tap the map lights somehow, but my electrical skills are pretty limited. I'm not sure it's possible to swap bases without doing some damage..

I found this while looking for the same ability for my Accord. Not the same as what comes on the 8 but it might work for you
