Compact sub in passenger footwell?

Just spoke of this on another thread, but to bring it into the open...

For those after moderate bass, how about a compact sub enclosure in the passenger footwell with a drilled aluminium face plate to match the drivers pedals.

I haven't played the space game yet, but some 8 inch subs can run in 0.3 cf and there's a low profile 10 inch AVI Sound sub that runs in a 0.6 cf enclosure (I'm talking gross internal volume).

Rotarygod, if you're reading, tell us your thoughts on a sealed aluminium enclosure ... apart from model the capacity in timber first

I can't speak for Rotary, but he already mentioned this to me as a good location for a sub. He said he thinks theres enough room behind the passenger and driver seats for such an arrangement.

Edit: I meant to say underneath the footwells. I don't know why I said "behind" or "seats"

I'm not talking about behind the seats. I am referring to the forward most area of the cabin. On the drivers side it is bhind the pedals! I did this in my 2nd gen RX-7 and had .3 cu. ft. per side. Perfect for a 6" woofer and most 8" woofers. Every car I have owned has had the space to do this. Some cars have lots of room and others don't have near as much. There are always ways around this though and an aperiodic system vented to the outside of the car is one such example. For a really shallow mounting depth sub take a look at Illusion Audio. Audiobahn has a series of very shallow mounting depth (2") woofers as well.

Aluminum can be made to work if you can find the aluminum and get it cut and welded up. Aluminum tends to ring alot though so this may not sound that great. You will really need to line the inside of the enclosure with modeling clay pretty heavily to stop the resonating as well as having some kind of cross bracing. I'd do fiberglass before aluminum. It's easier to do, can be made into any shape, and doesn't resonate like aluminum does.

Yes, I was talking front passenger footwell, but it won't give me enough umph.

I'm looking at all of the possible options to keep the entire car standard in appearance.

It's currently looking like AVI BSM-160 mid bass drivers front and rear, with HF-30B tweeters also front and rear. This leaves me an option of adding MDN-50 mids low in the front if its a bit lacking in mid high's - but I couldn't imagine this to be after all of my auditioning/comparisons.

But the bass ... I'm all over the show like a mad woman's breakfast.

Hey, I'm seriously considering a single AVI SL-170 in a bandpass enclosure - that should get down to 40~45hz with reasonable gusto in something well under 1 cubic foot in total.

(I'm after clean tight punchy bass with no urge to make people's teeth ache in the next suburb)

I'll probably change my mind 50 times on the sub's format!

Guys,

I corrected my comments above. I meant footwell. I don't know why I said seats.

We were and still are on the same page.
