Shinka / Navigation Install Possible?

Hi All,

I really want a RX8 with both navigation and satellite radio, but have yet to find one with both (I am in the SF Bay area). The dealer says that satellite radio interferes with navigation, so it is impossible to have both in a car. I'd like a second opinion...

Anyway, I saw a Shinka today and really liked it. Shinka comes with Sirius, but not with navigation. Do you know whether it is possible to pop in the OEM navigation unit? I really would like one that is unobtrusive, and so I prefer not to have an aftermarket.

I have searched for an answer to this question, but have yet to find one. This site is great, and I've spent many hours on it, and I really appreciate all of your enthusiasm and info on the 8!

Many thanks. Chris

This thread should answer you question:

Not sure about the interference part of things, but you can install the Navi... however if you take a look at that thread you will understand just how daunting a task that can be. :D

Consider a mobile nav system

Hi Chris -

I have a Shinka - it wouldn't be worth it to pay for the nav system, cut up the dash and put in the complex wiring and sensors required.

Mobile navigation systems that are reasonably sized are just coming onto the market now at a fraction of the price that car manufacturers charge for nav as an option on a new car. Like any first gen electronic product there are issues with them - reception and screen resolution are adequate but not great. There will be a lot more choice in about a year.

If you can wait for a second generation model to appear I think you will end up with something that will work well and you can swap it between cars - something to consider whether you get a Shinka or not.

Good luck with your purchase - hope to see you on the board soon with an Rx-8.

a few things here...

1. The dealer is talking out of his ***. The Sat radio will not interfere with the Sat Nav.

2. The best part about the nav on the 8 is how integrated it is...and the motorized screen...
really it is about putting video on the nav screen :D
