Question Routing Bass From Deck To Subs

I was at BestBuy and the guy told me he has to install a router from the stock deck to my 2 12" subs? Whats he talking about?

I can install the subs and run the wires and fuse to the battery, replace all the stock speakers my self but removing the front face plate on the stock deck might be a b!tch. Aside from that do anyone know what he was talking about? and if you do will it be hard to install this my self if I buy it?

They want $40bucka a pair and $75 for the subs installed with bass router.
Is that good? I called other car stero places and they quoted me $300 to install everything!

Keep in mind I made my own custom sub case.

Thanks for anyinfo,
-Gil

I think what he talking about is called a crossover,

basically it just send the bass to the subs and everything else to the interior speakers. because you don't want your subs playing everything, and you don't want your interior speakers playing low notes if you have the sub.

so yeah - having one is a good idea, but your amps may be able to do it for you...

and what are you talking about removing the front face plate on the stock deck? i don't understand exactly what your trying to do??

shouldn't have to remove the front face plate, since it is generally attached to the rest of the radio... but it is no problem to take it out. there are actually a few threads about taking the radio out.

and I have no clue what a bass router is. maybe ask them to clarify? then do it yourself.

Why would you have to pull the radio apart to do that? Unless he's going to replace the stock wires with high quality shielded ones. :S I'm confused!

I work in the roadshop at Circuit City. I'll be the first to say the resources we are given to work on vehicles is sub par at best. I can honestly get just about all of the same info off Metra's website. And also being the owner of an RX8, I know there is very little correct info on the 8. Odds are the "router" this moron is referring to is a line output converter. Yeah. He's an idiot.

Second... the associates on the sales floor are sometimes new and uneducated. They may only be covering for an AWOL associate, they may be just new to that department or may be new altogether. Speaking from experience....sometimes you have to fill the holes with whomever you have.

Third, a very common practice when installing an aftermarket amp and speakers is to wire the amp in the rear of the car... (obviously)... and then run all the speaker wires back to the headunit. Splice into the speaker leads and booya... no need to run wires through the door boot (or molex in this case) (Also provided there is no stock amp). Yeah yeah yeah. I know. I know. We all know better. But most of the time we simply do not have time to do it completely. 99% of customers are not going to know/notice a difference anyway and provided they're only running 60-70WRMS, its totally safe. (Again, 99% of customers). Hey... when Circuit City allows 50,000 appointments to be scheduled a day and you have 10 customers in your shop bitchin up a storm... you gotta find quick little work around were you can. YEAH I KNOW. This is why people dog on CC and BB. But if I want to keep my job, I have to move the customers. When I work on my own or friend's vehicles, I take my time.... but sorry.... I've gotta rush everyone else.

EDIT: Oh and removing the stock headunit is not too bad at all. I've worked on much worse. Check the FAQ at the top of the forum for a walkthrough on it.

Wow thanks for the info Dude this crap sounds like too much for me to do in 100+ heat so I think I'll just let them install the 2 subs and I'll do the rest.
Thanks for the help on me decision.
