Great install RotorGeek.
I'm actually thinking about switching mine from a laptop hdd to a PC hdd for speed reasons (e.g. to help get a faster boot time). If I have to replace it a little more often, then I don't mind, because it's cheaper in the first place.

If you want speed, just go SATA. Those even come in 2.5" (laptop) configurations. My preference for smaller drives has nothing to do with shock resistence and everything to do with physical size, power consumption and heat. The smaller the better so 1.8" drives look attractive to me. As far as shock goes... there are people on mp3car.com that have had accidents that total their car while the PC was running and the HDD was just fine.

OK guys i got the Mbus to PC adaptor on Friday. It works. You plug it in to the Mbus and then to the PC (USB+MIDI Ports). You run the software to install the drivers then Install WINAMP. Yes you have to run WINAMP. Once Winamp is installed you run another file that installs a Plugin for Winamp. Now you have to make at least 6 playlist and then config the plugin to use those playlist.
Once everything is done you hit the CD button till you get the EX on the display Then hit the Preset button 1 to scroll thur the 6 playlist. Once you select the Playlist you want just use the up and down buttons on your steering wheel to go to the next song. The only downside is I have to use Winamp. Ohh well i will get used to it.

as for linking the buttons to certain tasks check there website
from what I remember you just assign buttons to certain commands as other programs have buttons linked

if you use RoadRunner as your front end....it uses Winamp as backend....the controls should still work. Just kick off winamp set your playlist first then open RR and the controls should work. Do you use the PIE adapter and then the MBus adapter to get this to work? That is awesome, i didn't even plan on getting steering wheel controls to work.

It'll void your warranty (if there's one left), but it should work. As long as the hardware types are the same they will comply with the same standards... IDE ATA/100, SCSI, SATA...

So I have to ask, because this is exactly what i'm planning on doing to my car in the next month or so. Does anyone know the part number on the Factory Nav Screen Motorized Hood, so I can start shopping around for one? That's the last part I need to start building my comp. Thanks.

Here's the part number FE0166DV01 I got mine on ebay and used something like mazda navigation screen or mazda lcd. Try lots of different ****. good luck

unfortunately Mazda usually requires you to buy the entire nav packages even though it has seperate part numbers...
which includes the nav/nav screen/wiring harness/sensors
you may be able get just the dash piece with LCD screen already mounted though if you were able to make a service order through a dealership (would need to be approved)...have any friends at dealerships?
I'll PM you the link to the service manual and parts list, download the list so you can find the part number and maybe you'll get lucky

the housing unit has the motor in it...you'll have to setup the power so that it is controlled correctly
