Question Question to those using the 4080 sub box

I was wondering what is the bass like with these boxes. Do you get sufficient bass with them, considering that the trunk pass-through module is in place? I'm looking for deep, warm sounding, filling bass, not crazy boom that can be heard outside. The key is to go deep and have enough to complement the rest of my system (non-Bose but apart from the head unit, everything is upgraded).

Another thing is: what 10" sub would be recommended to use with this box? I have an Alpine 5-channel amp already.

Thanks!

Tamas,

Even with a 10w3v2, I get more bass than I know what to do with. Corner loading is a very good location for a sub and the bass has no trouble making it into the cabin (i.e. removing the passthrough bin doesn't increase the bass much vs having it in place.)

Especially for those with the stock system - one 10w3v2 in a 4080 will generate far more output than the rest of the music.

It works really well.

I would have loved to use two 4080 boxes but the price would have cost more than my entire system so I built my own boxes. One sub is more than enough bass, if I were going to do it again, I'd only use one sub. I'm running two Kappa Perfect 10.1's and they are crazy crisp and clean.

What you want to do is download WinISD Pro Alpha software (not the old non-Pro Beta), and then enter the T/S specs of various subs that you're looking at, placing them in a 0.8cuft sealed box (which is what the 4080 box is).

It all depends on what kind of music you listen to, and how loud you want it. I have an out-of-production Elemental Designs e10O sub that goes really low (for a sealed sub), but requires a lot of power.

The Hoffman's Iron Law says that to get deeper low-end extension in the same box size, you have to decrease efficiency. If you have a high-efficiency sub, you will need a big big box to hit low.

So essentially, with the box size fixed (4080 box), the lower you want to go, the less loud your sub will be with the same power.

Thanks for the responses - I settled for the 4080 box plus a Kappa Perfect 10.1D. They are on the way
The Perfect would need only a 0.6 cubic feet enclosure, so the 4080 box will be a little too large for it, but I hope it will still sound good. I know someone runs the same setup with good results, so I have my fingers crossed.

You can make the 4080 box on ur own if u like, and it will save you alot of money. I will say that the 4080 sub box is nice, but way way over priced. Learn to make one with fiberglass, its really not that hard, i made a box in my 93 7 it looks good, almost like a pro. I like the set up, the one guy did a w7 between his rear seats... its seriously F***in beautiful and i wish i could do the same.

It will be fine, you will get slightly deeper bass as a result (of being in a 0.8 box). Let us know how it sounds when you get it.

I got mine for way less than the regular price, plus the grille (with the rotary symbol) is even painted already. I think it was worth paying for it instead of trying to build a box as my first fiberglass project. :o
It would be nice to learn how to do it but I have too little time for such a thing - gotta work and have a family

These are on my official "Must buy for RX-8 List":

-Just wish I didn't have to get all new subs (have 12's in my other car now)
-Wish they were a bit cheaper.

Don't get me wrong, even at stated price they're still a good deal.

I just got my 4080 box.. the rotary grill is cool, but it can look really good even without it...

it's pricey, but looks really well made. Fits great... I have a great 10" sub to go with it, but I am weeks away from the installation.

The extra trunk space in my trunk is nice, plus the quality of the work and a great fit... I guess that makes it worth the money. Depends on your finances. I am dropping $1400-1500 so far on my audio :/

Everyone who has gotten these boxes seems to be loving them. It's definitely reassuring.

I dropeed about 2K on the system in my '99 Mazda 626 so I think it's only fair I out do myself on the RX-8.

Thanks for the positive comments everyone, I am glad that I can provide a quality product for you RX8 guys. If anyone is worried about having the "exact" air space recommended by the woofers manufactuer, I can add some FREE poly-fill to every box sold. Poly-fill can add up to .3 cuft for every 1 cuft. of air space. Air space can also be subtracted by adding styro-foam. Blocks of Styro-foam can be glued to the inside of the eclosure to take away air space without adding weight. Please also remember that the woofer itself takes up to .2 cuft. If you have any questions please PM me. I may be delayed in answering everyones questions. I live in Houston and we are housing family members that were caught in Hurricane Rita.

Thanks, 4080

A question regarding the poly-fill: is it necessary to glue a poly-fill lining on the inside the 4080 box or not? I'm not talking about stuffing the enclosure, just about a 1" layer on the inside walls.

It's not necessary. Polyfill lining is essentially similar to stuffing that much polyfill into the box. It's only necessary if you want to make your box appear bigger than it really is (the purpose of polyfill). So, with 0.8 in the 4080 box, polyfill lining may, for example, give you the sound of a 0.85 box (pulled this number out of my hind quarters).

OK, I have something else to ask
Apart from the little metal tab on the top of the box (that goes underneath the trunk weatherstrip) and the weight of the assembly, is there anything else that holds this thing in place?
If there isn't, is this safe? I mean, it is pretty heavy with the sub and all, and also quite snug fit, but I thought another point to secure it would be necessary. Should I worry about this at all?

I've never had a problem with it moving at all. Once its in place, its in place.

Tamas,

It is such a snug fit that even without the metal strip it holds in well.

I actually "test drove" the first box without the strip. With DSC off, I tried my hardest to dislodge the box. Over time it would probably move out of place, but with the metal strip it centers it permenantly.

The design was specially constructed to allow for some shrinkage of the fiberglass overtime. It is a very snug fit.
