Lets hope so...I just look on the site and it looks like $20 plus shipping to update the firmware....I can live with that.

I will probably go with the RSW 3 Gauge hood in black FRP when it becomes available. In the mean time, if someone pipes the OBII-CanScan unit into software that produces a real-time monitoring of the car's sensor network, or multiple "gauge" display (discussed here recently, and in an older thread here), then I'll "have" to go with the RMagic 1DIN Dash Panel. :D

That's pretty cool. I like the MazdaSpeed version graphics better though.

Me too, but that isn't from Mazda Japan to my knowledge. the JDM MS RX-8 has no bells and whistles like leather interior or Bose stereo. This leads me to believe that it is likely a custom job.

That's pretty cool. And for $250, as opposed to the Mazdaspeed unit for $1400 before shipping, I like it even better. For that matter, when you figure that the 1-Din panel costs ~$457 plus the cost of a display at ~$400 plus the OBDII-CanScan tool at ~$160 plus the cost of a computer, that $250 unit looks even better.

So the question is: do they have it for an RX-8???

Just out of curiosity, can the newer software be used on standard non-CAN OBDII systems? Or, if I already had an older OBDII scanner could I just use the CANScan adapter?

Omicron,

I don't think the HKS digital gauge unit uses OBDII or CAN, so it isn't car dependent. Rather it's like Defi, Blitz, Pivot, etc. gauges using sensors and a sensor harness. So you should be able to use it on your 8 with no problem.

The computer solution is better for those whom already wanted a carputer... for mp3, navigation and DVD. OBDII/CAN gauges are just an added bonus. This is more costly, but hey... you were already laying out a bit to get started.

Yeah, I spent some time on HKS's crappy website yesterday and gathered as much. Sure would be nice if they made it clearer what it can and cannot do and what is required. But near as I can gather, you'd need to buy the HKS digital gauge thing, and a display (the fine print on HKS's site says it's not included!) and all of the sensors. Total all that up and you're probably at or over $1400.

So we're back to the simple and elegant CanScan plug in plus a display. Sure wish someone who was tinkering with this would jump in here and update us!

I've customized the display elements in Windows VB, but I haven't had the time or resources to install a DIN panel or motorized TFT screen in the RX-8.

That will all be part of my A/V setup, which is probably still several months away.

Sweet! Can you give us a little details on what it shows? Maybe a screen shot? If you've got the display elements interface set up, I can look into the TFT screen perhaps. PM me if you like. Thanks! :D

I'm picturing a rolling science project worthy of FnF3...

Not much to say.
I have my own customized front end for CanScan, but I don't have any LCDs on the car yet, so it hasn't been a priority.

Cool, thanks Jeff. If it's PC based, and you'd like to provide me with a copy, I can start looking into the LCD screen in the car...

Rosco is still working on making it more automated and easy to use. I'll also probably whip together a 1/4 mile type program in the next few weeks... thats actually pretty easy so i didn't spen much time on it.

I was planning on getting my flash programming buddy to throw together a guage package to would look like the stock guages... but...

more progress will come when I actually get my CANscan... maurice has been making some hardware/software improvements which I hear will be out within the next week.

I have a good start on the dynamic dyno program with pr0ber's app as a starting point, but I haven't gotten my CANScan yet either, so I'm limited to test data. I'll try to call Michelle at CanZoomer tomorrow to see what's up.

I wasn't thinking of doing guages, but can look into it.
