Finally got my OBDII-CanScan tool (here) running today. What great data it spits out.

If someone could program another display front end that would show a users choice of parameters, what an awesome guage set that would be!:D !.

(RPM, Speed, Cat Temp, Coolant temp, A/F ratio, Air Flow, Air temp, etc)

Forget analog gauge clusters, just stick a VGA display up there on the dash, stuff the laptop somewhere..... dreaming away..... then add some emanage hookup with maybe <Economy> <Normal> <Racing> buttons to auto-tune for us. :D

Also noted the CanScan speed is 2mph less than the digital display....wondering why??

i was in the process of making a nice front end and a dyno/performance program for the CanScan with my programming buddy until he decided to get married

Don't worry...he'll get over it. If he's good, he'll be programming away in his brain until he gets a chance to write it down eventually. then you're back at it again! :)

I think I might just buy the autoenginuity scan tool...

I downloaded the instruction booklets and started looking over them. Their dyno program adjust for drag (w/user defined coeff of drag and frontal area numbers) as well as altitude and weather conditions. Thats exactly how I would have done it myself. The rest of the functions seem very logical, easy to use, and nice looking.

About the only bad thing is their programming code is pretty locked so you can't do much except change colors of things...

Man, that multi monitoring setup makes me droooooool... :D

CZ-CANSCAN tool

RX8 Friend,

Got any pics/info on the CZ CANSCAN system that I see listed on the Canzoomer.com product/pricelist?

r0tor 06-08-2004 06:22 PM

the name seems to imply its a CANSCAN by Harrison R&D with possibly a nicer front end from CZ???

am I close???

RX-8 friend 06-08-2004 09:51 PM

It's just a small box with cables that you plug into the OBDII port under the steering wheel, and plug into a laptop computer. Comes with a program that lets you log, watch info., etc. I understand the program has been greatly improved. Yes, it's made by someone else. Not sure who, you may be correct on the name.

That's Maurice's baby. I haven't messed with it yet. Just watched the data appear while holding on for dear life as Maurice "tests" things. Oh, and holding the laptop as well!

Fun with cars ;) .

One of these days we're going to try it in my Pathfinder as well.

r0tor 06-09-2004 05:58 PM

would it be possible to see some screen shots of the greatly improved program??

Shooter 06-10-2004 09:27 AM

i bought the one from harrison r&d. got it yesterday. very cool. extremely user friendly.

CZ and CanScan OBDII

Who has a CZ unit or a Greddy, and has a CanScan OBDII reader/logger. It would be interesting if there was a way to compare data from different cars, and try and come up with whats up. Any ideas on the best way to compare the data, what to do for standardized runs (as much as possible)
Maurice....any ideas?? Could this be a help for you?

Shooter 06-14-2004 06:39 PM

Im going to try to log some data with my canscan in the next couple of days, weather permitting (its been raining all day here and is supposed to tomorrow too). Ill post what I find and we'll see if we get similar readings...

MazdaManiac 06-14-2004 07:42 PM

Didn't I already post this information somehwere? :p

Guess I'll have to do it again.

dannobre 06-14-2004 08:19 PM

Talked to Maurice today....the update for the CanScan that he and Dan Harrison are doing is almost done. Will give faster data refresh rates, and improved interface......will give tuning quality data. Until I get the upgrade, I will just have to play at a slower rate....and wait for more speed :D

MazdaManiac 06-14-2004 08:26 PM

Already logging at .1 second.
Any faster than that is superflous.

dannobre 06-14-2004 08:36 PM

Can only log 4 parameters, and the data stream can't keep up at that rate supposedly. They are changing the baud rate from 19.2 to38.4...should give better results

Oh, I see.

I have the new chip and software (6 parameters and a higher baud rate). I didn't realize he hasn't released that generally yet.

dannobre 06-14-2004 11:27 PM

My software has the new setting but I still have the old firmware running at 19K....for another week or so

Shooter 06-15-2004 07:28 AM

Dannobre,

How do we get the new software? I just bought mine for Harrison a week ago.

r0tor 06-15-2004 02:52 PM

I may be of some help... I'm trying to put together a dyno program that uses the CANScan data. I want to get the CANscan because its cheap but wanted a dyno function - so i'm making my own!

I'm putting together a spreadsheet that takes RPM and time data converts it into a hp and torque graph. I then correct for drag. Finally, I use the SAE correction factors for ambient temp and pressure. You should then have something that is reproducable and comparable with an actual chassis dyno (except that the front wheels are spinning and have additional losses which I wish to account for eventually).

Anyway, I haven't ordered my own CANscan yet so I don't have any real data to try out... which is why I'm posting this - someone give me some data and you'll get a dyno sheet back...

What I need is for somebody to put their car in 2nd or 3rd gear doing about 1500 rpms and then floor it and take it to redline. During this time I need the rpm's to be logged with a timestamp (speed would be nice too), the temp and pressure when the test happened, the vehicle weight (or I'll just use the listed weight), additional weight (like you riding in the thing), what gear you used, and what tire size you have (if its different from stock)

From there I can see what happens....

dannobre 06-15-2004 03:06 PM

E-mail Dan Harrison...I think the software is up on the site though
Ver 3.50R2 is the one I have. Supposedly the new firmware hardware will be out soon!

Prober: I am doing runs on the weekend....will send to you if you want....PM me the address....I would wait for the new CanScan version if you haven't bought it yet. What I heard Maurice and Dan have something that should be great!

Shooter 06-15-2004 03:31 PM

So it looks like i am gonna have to shell out for the new firmware hardware when i just got my canscan a week ago? that sucks.......

dannobre 06-15-2004 03:35 PM

Me too......shouldn't be much......for a big improvement!
