New Shallow Mount Subs - opinion, set up, good/bad?

I have researched the threads already on here and no one has seemed to address the newer lines of shallow mounting depth sub woofers...

Does anyone have/heard the newer subs that only need like 3.5 inches of depth? Advantages? Disadvantages? I'm looking at 10"s.
I'm on a budget, but willing to put some money into the equipment and build the custom boxes myself... I listen to mostly classic rock, so sustained lows aren't very important. I like to feel the music though.

I'm looking at Kicker CV10s and pioneer has a whole line of shallow mounts also. I did have 2 10in mtx thunders in my old car, but the with smaller trunk in the 8, I can't have a full box like i used to have.

So, 1) does anyone know about these shallow mount subs? Brands, good, bad, not worth it cause the sounds sucks, etc...

2) The 4080 box seems to be the best on keeping usable space, but does anyone else have any real non-intrusive set-ups? (I gotta have room for a full hockey bag, which already requires some clever handling just to get it into the trunk)

3) Advice from the former car audio guys???

-Sorry about starting another thread about this, but no one has really addressed these shallow mounts yet. (that I found)

Illusion Audio nd12's would be one of your absolute best subs you could find. They have an inverted motor that comes out the cone, creating a very shallow sub. They're pretty rare and not cheap, but are some of the best sounding subs on the market. They lack the 'oomph' of a lot of other subs, but are extremely accurate.

I believe Critical Mass also sells subs using a similar design. Again, they're not cheap, but after hearing my brothers CM component set, I'd recommend them.

JL Audio also has some slim mounts in the works.

if you're just looking for a little extra oomph then a set of 8's or even some 6's in that little passthtrough between the rear seats might work. There's several companies with decent shallow mounts currently, but if it were me I'd hold off for a while though as they're an emerging technology and several well known companies have some exciting designs coming. If space is an issue then I'd look at doing the passthrough idea, or maybe even something like a bazooka tube or similar.

I just ordered an Elemental Designs SQ10. I will have it installed in a week or so depending on when it arrives. It will be mounted in the trunk indent in a custom box and sit flush with the rest of the trunk floor. Full thread with plans and pics will be coming soon.

As much as I would love to discredit pioneer right next to you they DO hold the current SPL record of 180.3

I can't vouch for their SQ *especially* the shallow mount stuff. But I do maintain a certain level of respect to them for their accomplishments.

and to add - unless I enter a world class SPL comp, I'm going to stick with Alpine

Yeah... I can't justify paying competition prices. I've always had good luck with pioneer head units and speakers (never subs though)... and considering I get my stereo stolen about once every year (i'm not kidding) I tend not to get too attached.
I think i'll hold off and wait until some more people test these shallow mounts. I may look into going with the pass-through design with 2 8s or something. I just am afraid that 8s will be too small and I will still have to get something larger.
