CA Metra Kit/Double Din Died!

so i was driving down the 101 freeway when the display panel [shows temp/time] turned off and the double din would not turn on. im sure noting got fried because because all the interior lights work [map, door and dome lights] also the ac works but the green light that turns on when you press the AC button does not light up.

what could it be? just a loose wire?

i know i need a firmware update [thanks Reverend for not telling me that you had it]

but as for the overheat, that would make sense since the fires here in cali have made it freaking hot here.

so if it overheated then does that mean its done [dead] or what?

hey it sounds like your metra box might have overheated...you can pop the cover off the box and take a look, maybe youll see a fried resistor on the board in there or something...theres not much to that box. The odd thing is, if I remember my installation right, your double din doesnt connect through the metra box at all does it? That wiring is seperate from your metra box, ac control, and display. Id start checking all your fuses, and definitely trace back your power wire that I assume is feeding 12v to the metra box, and your double din. You may have burnt that wire or the ground wire and its shutting down both systems. I dont know, just my 2cents, i had a similar problem a few months back.

thanks SHAKEYOURBRAKES!

i found out it was a fuse, the only thing is why would i blow a fuse a couple months later after i installed the kit?

i blew the second fuse, which was a [brown i think] 7.5 fuse.

also where do i get these fuses?
do i go to mazda or can i get them at autostore? i.e. autozone/pepboys ect.

any autozone will have them..the little assorted packs are a good idea to have in your car. Sometimes a fuse will just blow, but it can happen if a wire has a small slit in it and touches metal or something. Glad you figured it out

ok sorry, but i went to autozone and got a new 7.5 fuse, but guess what happened... it blew again!

what could have happened? i honestly cant figure it out! it does not seem like the problem is with the metra kit or the axcess box itself but somewhere in the wiring.
and yes the double din is connected to the axcess box.

i know i know.... but anyways on the more important issue about the whole thing dying... im assuming it could be an exposed wire some how? is it possible for you to take a look at it because i have no idea how you got the axcess box behind the glove box!

if you keep blowing fuses after it has worked before i would start looking for a wire that has rubbed through it's sheath and is making contact with metal and grounding out.

Yeah I agree with others here, sounds like you'll have to take it all out and see if there is an exposed wire somewhere.

You could stick a higher rated fuse in there.

The problem with that is that if there is a short, it isn't going to matter what size fuse is in there, it is still going to blow.

worth a try, 7.5 is pretty low, maybe theres too much juice going through there with the double din and metra and it just gave up. Try a 10 or at most a 15 and see if your all set

thanks guys!

maybe its because i powered a tv antenna, backup camera and the indash together.

the reason for that is because The Reverend tried powering those through the cig. lighter but we blew a fuse so we just decided on powering everything with the indash.

but its still kind of weird that it happens now, and not before. but then again would it make a difference if i was playing music louder than normal? because of the recent fires here i decided to roll down the windows, so i turned the music up [this was on the freeway]

you may want to think about running a direct power line from your battery to your dash, with an inline fuse. Id never power all that stuff off the same line as my double din, especially the tv antenna which probably dips and surges in power according to a signal. If your suddenly blowing fuses id separate some of the 12v power..you might save some equipment in the long run

and hey dont catch on fire out there, cali looks crazy right now on the news

alright so i took your advice about the fuses and well there's some good news and bad news
the good news... i used a 20 and it worked fine till it blew again.

then i decided to use a 30 and i turned the key and smoke started coming out of the indash metra kit. 0.o

so what could that be?
i already disconnected the antenna.

A short, misconnection, or defective unit.

Smoke could mean you fried something on a circuit, which almost always means that something broke. Otherwise, it could just be a wire melted where the short/misconnection is.
