Just personal preference. My car is Titanium Gray, so I just thought it would be a cleaner look without the red, and since you don't need a red lense to get a red light from LEDs I would like to eliminate it. Looks good on yours though since your car is red.

There are a ton of cheap LED third brake light kits on ebay, most are for American cars and trucks (nothing for the RX-8), but I can see how you could take one apart and use the LED reflectors to get the same effect as the guy from the French forum. Here's one for a Mustang, you can see that the reflectors are similar:

I found this:

1-9 = .99 cents
10-49 = .74 cents

These are made for leds

Thanks Mazurfer, but I'm really interested in converting to a bank of LEDs. I've seen the brake light stencil and it looks nice, but not for me. Besides, it already says RX-8 on my trunk so it seems a little redundant to me. For someone with shaved emblems it makes much more sense.

No worries here.
Just given you another option or idea if you hadn't seen it. Yeah, the redundancy is a little much and I think I'll be taking off one or maybe two of the rear badges.

better be careful- not only for the guy who might not understand reverse lighting coming from the CHMSL but also from the police officer who will write the ticket for having that white light(or other color for that matter) there. That third brake light (CHMSL) may only illuminate in red.

I seriously doubt a cop will write a ticket for having white reverse lights in my 3rd brake light. The white leds only come on when the car is put into reverse. How often do you back up in front of a cop anyway?

Besides, when backing up... more IS better.

Yeah, I'm thinking of converting my reverse lights to HID. Seriously though, they do make a halogen 7440 reverse light. Check it out (second item on page):
