JL W7 10" and a rockford 800 a^2 amp

Im not really keen on what sound system to get however through some advice i recieved from a friend I decided to go with the JL W7 10" and purchased his rockford, never used, 800 a^2 amp (it pushes out 1018 watts so says the certificate). I will post pics of the hardware and also of the instalation when its complete in about a week. My friend claims that this sound system will pound, what do you guys think? I only paid $450 for the jl w7 brand spankin new and $200 for the amp, I still have to build the box out of 3/4" mdx board and I guess run the wires. I was told that a enclosed box is much better (why is this so, I thought ported is louder?)Oh another thing would it be hard to run the wires my self or should i just let a shop do it. any advice is helpful thanks in advance.

it doesnt matter if you go ported or sealed.

what are the specs for that amp? the 10w7 has a single 3 ohm voice coil so that amp may not be the best for it.

Hey u should really go ported. 1.5 cubic feet is the perfect size for the box. I have a JL 10w7 running on a 500/1 with a fake wall and custom bass controls. The sub is definately loud enough ported...things really start moving...ported does double the effective amp power, but does make the bass a bit less tight. However, it is a w7, so it still sounds tighter than w3v2s sealed.

Kenwood 10" Sub & Amp

I was able to find a kenwood sub at a local pawn shop for less than $50. and purchased a new kenwood rated at 800 watts at best buy for $299.00. It not only hits hard but it works great with original standard system.

damn wow nice setup,

jonnyb what do you mean by it might not be the best amp for the speaker?

in my mind watts was what matter'd most will i blow the speaker? Or maybe not get full potential form the speaker with this amp.

Hey mxmedina Nice capacitor, just learned about those things might invest in one. look Killa

Rx82004 Yeah your right about the ported I guess but i figured if i sealed the box i would get a cleaner bass? so i thought i dont want it to be to loud and to punchy!

thank guys

The W7 runs at 3 ohms, while the power rating on the amp is at 1 or two ohms? If its two, the amp has some power, but put it at four ohms and the power wil halve. The good thing about the JL amps is that they have 500 watts at any ohms between 1.5 and 4. The sub may sound tighter in sealed...its jsut a matter of preferance. If u listen to hip hop then get ported...you will be much happier with it. Rock would benefit from ported also. If you are a fan of techno then sealed may be the way for you to go. Its just a preference.

I will do jonnyb Im at work now but when i come in tomorrow i will bring in the manual and i guess try to post what i think is important.

rx82004 If thats the case, I will port it seeing that i do listen to hip-hop and rock realigiously.

Intrigue wow I would love to go custom fiber with this setup however I just wanna sample this setup prior to making a long term commitment and if i do go that way i would have to invest in another jl w7 to balance the appearence. although i hope to duplicate your expierence with just one W7.

thanx guys

Ok jonnyb specs are

2-channel amplifier

960watts x 1
480watts x 2
240watts x 2
200watts x 2
400watts x 2
800watts x 2

> 100dB
12db/octave
50Hz - 210Hz

The Manual seems to state that the amp can be set at either 2 ohms, 4ohms, 8ohms. I talked with a friend and he told me that amps and speakers OHMS are always even so i think my speaker is a 4OHM speaker? NM it is as you stated 3 OHMS

I hope this is the information you need.
If not I will look for more.
thanx
