Interesting thought

I think replacing the speakers in the base stereo is a given.

So sitting around last night looking at speakers, I had a thought. First off, I think everyone agrees that setting up good speakers in the front is what you really need for good imaging. In fact, the rears aren't really all that necessary. Our real problem is driving the speaks with the HU, which is likely not putting out too much power. So... here is my idea!

Set up a really efficient component setup up front, probably 6x8 components. Run the FRONT speaker wires to the woofers, and the REAR speaker wires to the tweeters. This would mean superior wattage going to each, and hopefully better sound. Also means no rear speakers at all. Might be more trouble than it is worth, but it just struck me as an interesting avenue.

I'd love to hear some thoughts on this.

Also, I have used MB Quarts in the past and loved them. The highs are quite brassy, but using the crossover you can drop the tweeters to a more appropriate output.

ok, interesting thought, and the concept would work if you were using an aftermarket amplifier, but as you are going to be using the fact h/u, or fact amp if you have the bose system, it wont work that great.

reason, you would also have to buy an (expensive) bi-ampable crossover, as you would be using both front and rear channels for just the fronts (bi-amp). thats if you are running off of the factory non bose h/u

bi-ampable crossovers are available, but they tend to be expensive, i have experience with mb quart (pre rockford) and the basic x-overs were pretty expensive, and to get ones that would do what you want are more expensive, generally available with the higher end component sets, but then you need to use an external amp anyway.

if you have the bose, then the bose system i believe has seperate channels for each speaker, ie front left tweet, front left woofer, front right tweet, etc.....

btw, congrats on the new car, hope you love it

Ummmm, no it won't make any amount of difference. Power is needed to make a speaker move. The larger the speaker, the larger the mass, the more power is needed to operate it. The smaller the speaker, the less energy needed in order to move the cone. Thus 5 watts can make a tweeter scream, but 5 watts to a woofer and the thing barely does anything.

Effieciency is key here. Coaz speakers are for the most part way more effecient that their component counterparts. Now the components sound better for the most part but their tradeoff is that they need more power to get them up and running solidly.

The tiny little amp in a cd player is struggling to product 15 watts of clean power for the most part, regardless of what is written on the front of it. A good sounding system is one that is compatible with the vehicle (or the vehicle made to conform to the audio setup), one that is properly matched together to do the right job and most important, installed properly. So in the long run if you are going to be using a component speaker, amplify them so as the speaker can do it's job properly.
