ideas on a car-puter

i really want to do a car-puter project using the nav dash hood, i just dont know where to start, i searched some post and found some real crazy ones like with macs. i dont really need to take it to that level though. if any one did this project with a 06 without a oem nav system and has the list of items needed and any tips, or suggestions on where i can pick up the nav dash hood. i will really appreciate it.

I did my CarPC a few months ago now, back in mid-november on my 05 Shinka so I don't think it would be too much different. If you want to do it with an OEM nav hood (that's the route I went with also) finding the hood is going to be the hardest part. I just kept an eye on ebay and one day I caught a deal.

As far as everything else, most things can be found on mp3car's store. You will need a computer obviously so hopefully you can put one of those together. I went with a standard intel mini-itx motherboard, some cheaper ram and a mini-itx case. Funny enough the mini-itx cases fit perfectly in the center pass-through in the back so that is where I mounted mine. Then you need to get a power supply that will work with the motherboard, I went with an M3. You wire that up from the battery and ACC lines so that the computer starts/shuts down with the car.

You also need to replace the LCD that is in the nav-hood. This is probably one of the most tricky parts of the whole process, it took me 2 days to transplant the LCD into the nav-hood. Lilliput displays seem to fit in quite well.

After that you need to figure out what you want to do with the computer. I hooked up to the OBDII connector to read a bunch of car stats. I also got a GPS receiver that I use with the Garmin Mobile PC software. You also need to decide on a way to hook it up to the stereo, I opted to use the Aux-Mod.

To sum up, you really need to know what you are doing, and it isn't by any means a quick project. It took me a few months to gather all of the stuff together and another week to get it installed in my car. In the end you can't even tell that it is there, which was my goal. A clean install takes a ton of time and even more patience so don't jump into it without really examining everything that has to go into the project.
