I improved the Valentine1

I think the V1 is the best radar detector available but it has one major shortcoming: all the LEDs are red. That means when a threat goes off you don't know if it's X, K or Ka without looking at the LED and then trying to read the tiny print next to it. It's harder when you have a remote display that's farther away from you. Forget about even trying when it's dark. What I need is a way to instantly tell which radar band the detector is picking up.

It took me a while, but here's my solution:

I thought I did. Allow me to repeat myself:

That`s cool. How hard was it to replace the LEDs?

I've never had a problem with them all being red, but that looks like a good idea. Done well, too. You should email your idea to Mike Valentine on their website - it would be interesting to hear his thoughts.

Great idea, especially for their remote display.

Neat mod, esp. for the remote and I love all the colors!

Even though I might do this for fun, personally I can' t remember the last time I looked at the display to determine the band in question as my brainium has the tones burned into it....i.e. "X"... don't care; "K' "Ka"... warning! warning! and "laser" ... oh ****!

Still very cool!

I emailed him about it five years ago when I bought my first Valentine. They basically ignored the suggestion.

Neat. I didn't know that. Interesting how we decided on the same colors. It's also interesting he chose blue for laser. Thanks for the link.

The LEDs are ~3mm x 1.5mm SMTs. If you have the tools and the talent you can swap them out. It wasn't until recently that I was able to make a desoldering tool to do this job. Talent you learn--I damaged the first one I did but was able to fix it. The second one was flawless.

Surface mounts? Yuck. that sucks. I don't have any of the surface mounting tools and desoldering surface mount is a big pain withou ta professional iron (one that can put the right heat in the right place w/o bleeding onto other parts of the board). I miss that stuff from school.
Nice job though. I recently reprogrammed my V1 to turn off X band completely as it's not used in this state.

Go to digg.com and search for "SMT soldering". A guy wrote a DIY to make such a tool cheap. That's what I used. It isn't pretty but it works.
