thanks! but actually it was crap cus it ended up becoming more wavy at the edges. i took it off and redid it all this time removing the rotary accent.

i used a heat gun to loosen up the glue holding in the button and then gently pried it out using pick tools.

i was then able to rewrap the accent with vinyl again folding the vinyl over the edges. it was next to impossible to get the vinyl to lay flat without slight creases here and there. but i did my best and once i put it all back together it looks a whoooole lot better. i'll take some pics tomorrow.

the top sequence badge had a pretty big pit in it. along with some tiny ones. so i took some rough sand paper and sanded it down. then gradually sanded down using finer sand paper. then i polished it out to remove tiny scratches. looks way better.

here are some pics. better than it looked.

Haha, nice job. Glad i kept reading...was starting to think you guys didn't get it apart. Had to do mine some years ago when people installing audio equipment couldn't figure out how to get my shiftknob off and broke the dam thing. Stumbled upon this thread looking for a 5spd shift nub for my FD haha

So the aim is to pop off the sequence then unscrew to get the chrome piece separated?

I really like the carbon fiber! Adds a lot to the look of the interior.

Bringing back an old thread to life?

Hey guys! Think I’ve found a way to revive the look of the Oem shifter on our MT RX-8!

this is what it looks like when I first started!

When I took it apart!

- removed the screw in order to have the silver part in my hands!

Took the silver “rotor” apart!

- I then sand it down using 400 wet or dry sand paper to remove all the scratches!

- once it was smooth to the touch, I used 1000 wet or dry sandpaper starting dry and finishing in wet.

Sanding it down with 400 and 1000 wet or dry sandpaper!

Once sanded!

I then polished it with a product called “PEEK” ! I’m not done yet! But gives you an idea of what can be done in order to bring back to life this 200-300$ shifter!

Remember, this was the worst side of my ****!

Still work in progress. But going on the right side I think!

Let me know what you guys think!

Nice work! Will have to try that myself. I first need to find a shifter with good leather. Mine is dried out. At least I know the metal top can be fixed up.

I’m also planning to redo my shifter boot.... But I’ll give it a try to do it all by myself. I’ll simply buy the exact same material or real leather and reproduce the pattern...(the way the Oem shifter boot is sewn (3 triangles together)! Never used a sewing machine before, that will be the funniest part! 😂

You can get a new vinyl boot on eBay for less than $10. Needs a little trimming but at the end I think it looks decent on the car. At least it works for me

Question for some of you folks that have looked closely enough. Are the tops of your ***** actually metal?

Mine on my ‘04 GT had broken off and been worn by the previous owners. Mine is obviously injection molded plastic after minimal inspection. So surprised to see anyone polishing theirs haha.

Just curious if this is something Mazda “upgraded” over the years.

UPDATE

So I finally got around to taking my illuminated **** apart to rewrap it and behold...another injection molded plastic top.

Who the heck has a metal cap on these things?
