Heater not working right on my 2005 RX-8. What's the problem?

My heater seems not to be working correctly. When you crank it all the way you get heat sometimes. But once I try to turn down the temperature it goes cold. It's very annoying. What seems to be the problem?

Check the DIY section for the repair, see if your symptoms match.........

RX8 Heat problem

Take a look at the excellent post by Wingnut at https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-do-yourself-forum-73/diy-no-heat-repair-heater-control-158200/. That will probably fix your problem.

It is still covered by warranty as long as there's no aftermarket parts installed. I was lucky i didn't start modifying yet

I had the same problem with my 2005 w/ 23k miles a few weeks ago. I took it to the dealership and they were gonna charge around 300 for the fix. I looked at the DIY and took about 2 hours of my time and fixed it.

I brought mine to the dealer and I had an expired warranty. They replaced the whole unit for me for free and said it was a manufacturing defect. I didn't have any mods on/in my car so it was all good. Man was I relieved. They said it's gonna mess up over time on you when it's turned to the heater and the ac button is on. That's what happened to me. The ac button would be on for some reason sometime. Maybe by accident. It would run like this for minutes and I would be unaware. I hate that button. Arrgh.

Their explanation is most likely BS. The defect is a terrible soldering job making the connections for the heating/cooling potentiometer very brittle and prone to breaking. Not sure they ever got this right, so you may run into the same problem with the replacement eventually.

Dammmmnnnn...just spent $500 at the dealer the day before reading this thread. Luckily enough I still have the old unit. If I do the repair myself, do you guys know if Mazda dealers have a return policy on their parts lol?
