Yea, whatever you all come with will be a decent alternative to the corksport. Lets face it... You really have to have a trade-off if you want to go after-market. You have to buy all the upgrades to the CS kit to get it to work properly. The mounting hardware shouldn't cost as much as the stereo itself.
Even if there were some issues with the first run, as long as it would be usable and able to be modified by the weekend tinkerers (like me) it would be a great option.
Buy one of these for 100 bucks, but another 50 or 75 into it to get it to look like what you want and do everything you expect from your stock radio.
My biggest problems are the compromises... if you go after-market you can lose you wheel controls, some climate control, clock, not to mention your radio display just sits there and looks stupid, but you can't remove it because those are the climate control displays... And obviously the stock stereo has serious "limitations" even with the Bose.
I'd be all over this option just to mess around with it. As long as the hardware components are there, people will be able to change it to be exactly what they want. Lets face it... we have 3 choices... deal with stock... Corksport for 700 bucks... or build something ourselves. At the least, this will be another option.
I'd buy a trial run and give feedback.

rx8scpowell - Is it possible for the "part" to be at least 2 different parts? It would make it easier for you to do a double din and single din later, but it would also offer up the chance for you to sell blank face plates for us to tinker with.

DeVilbOi... this is exactly what I have been thinking about for the past few days. I called and talked with the Plastic Injections Mold company today and asked if I could make these changes after they finished the drawing and they had no problem with it (lol... at $60 dollars an hour I am sure they are willing to design the whole damn car over again if I wanted to). I do not think this will be a hard change at all.

Wow i cant believe I just barely stumbled on this thread. I am looking to replace the stereo because my led's are on crack. I work for Circuit City and its sad that we have dash kits for everything except my car. Ive seen the work they did on the Mazda6 kit and compared to Corksports you get way better quality for the price. Definite interest in purchasing this...one way or another a new radio needs to go in...keep us posted..

I will be including it as an option. I think I will offer everything al' a carte so you can get what you need and no more..... Still waiting on my drawing back... I did get a quote back to build the mold and I about crapped myself...... Gotta shop it around a little more...

Update: Looking for some more quotes to get the mold made for the plastic. First two I got back have been a little high, above 12k for just the mold.. Will update as soon as I get some Cadd drawings and a mold maker.

Dumb question...instead of getting an injection mold done...could the cover be done in Carbon fiber and just be a replacement faceplate to the current headunit? I mean...the radio is a standard double din now right?

By no means do I want to take over this task...big props to rx8scpowell for it. My job involves thinking outside of the box and offering solutions to problems so I am used to throwing ideas out that have no merit. :P None of my ideas may be possible...but I know that if I don't throw it out there it is possible that nobody else will think of it.

well as long as its not to noticible....cause ive seen some members with the silver cf and wow...thats too much for me...me i like the dark stuff....where its not to noticible just in the right light..that wet look...
anyways back on topic...would be a great idea to have a 2-piece set. That way you can mix and match face plates. Im going to hold off on getting my double-din until this project is complete....something worth waiting for.
Hopefully if this is successful then powell can make some profit and will feel its worth it making the molds...does not matter if its a $400 kit...ill still take one...well it does matter but i would rather buy one from powell for the sole fact that this whole project was done by an 8 owner....with the purpose of making a high quality product and not just something that works.

Thanks for all your input, I appreciate it mroe than you might think. I have a couple days off next week that I can really dig into some alternative methods in creation. I will update everyone as soon as I have something. Keep the comments coming, it helps me keep my sanity... Thanks DeViLbOi

That is what I have been working on this week. If I can figure out if there is another production method for the plastic I can make this scenario work. It will cost me around 10-12K to get the mold made for just the faceplate if I go with Plastic Injection molding. I am meeting with a couple companies next week to discuss possible alternatives. Thanks for the pics, that reaffirms what I was thinking

I stole it from the auxmod install docs so don't thank me. :P Since the dash will be pretty flat I would sure hope that there is an alternative to injection molding. Hell...I don't think I would mind even some brushed aluminum.
