Dude let Darwin do his job :)

No use doing more work (hence making it more expensive) 'cause people are dumb. Soon they're gonna ask you to make something so that they can't close the door in case their foot is still outside.

All these extra "safety features" make people dumber since they don't actually have to think. Aversive therapy people!

I know I sound like a mom (which I am) but this is pretty dangerous. There's a reason cars don't come with one-touch up windows anymore. Would this even pass inspection? And this has gone far enough I think, that you need to think about contacting AutoAdvertiser@internetbrands.com before you go any further if you're really serious.

When I raised this point it wasn't to put a negative slant on an otherwise well-executed idea, and yes, I wouldn't expect any reasonably intelligent adult to stick his head out the sunroof while engaging the close button. But the reason NHTSA doesn't allow one-touch closure devices is because of children and pets. Actually, let me restate that - they allow it if the device has some kind of pinch protection that auto-reverses. Not long ago certain manufacturers (Ford, for example) used rocker switches for their window operation, which meant that you pushed down to both open and close the windows. There were incidents where children and pets put their head out the window and inadvertently stepped on the switch...

It's not impossible to imagine someone backing their car out into the driveway to clean it or something while the kids are playing - the key is in the ignition on ACC or maybe the engine is running - and a child stands on the seat with their head out the sunroof. If their hand hits the close switch, a very serious accident may occur.

In the litigious country in which most of these would be sold, I wanted to make sure the member who was manufacturing and selling these, along with any buyers, was aware of the potential danger.

Ford took a lot of heat with this ad awhile ago, and understandibly so (BEWARE - IT'S A BIT DISTURBING): http://www.spike.com/video/2688815?c...es=VID_2688815

i haven't kept up with this thread, but just read this ... am i missing something, MOST cars have an auto up on windows now. has that changed?? it just has (should have) the pinch protection, but almost all cars i can think of (that aren't super cheap) have auto up and down winows...

w0rm 03-12-2008 10:59 AM

I'd be more interested in a driver side switch for "everything open" and "everything closed" It's almost muscle memory now that when I'm parking I use one hand to close the moonroof and one to close both side windows.

Hitting one button to open/close all three would be awesome. MIght be a summer project..

The 8 doesn't- you have to hold the window button up(I should add that I could be mistaken, but in 4 years of owning this car I've never gotten it to do an auto-up, just an auto-down). I'm pretty sure there was a law passed in 2006 about this- at the very least, there was legislation being pushed to make manufacturers remove the auto-up windows because of the danger. I'm trying to find confirmation of this.

Here...http://www.consumersunion.org/pub/co...ty/003341.html

Switches were made that can't be accidently set off. Still doesn't answer the auto up/down question, though.

I'd have to look up the latest requirements from the NHTSA, but the force that the sensor must reverse from is quite light. I think it approximates a finger being caught and not breaking under the load or something - not sure of the Newtons.

And I'm pretty sure it has to reverse, not just stop. Anyway, like I said, I'm not trying to be the harbinger of bad news or anything, I just don't want a member of the forum to be exposed to a lawsuit or something silly. I'm not a lawyer so I have no idea what liability, if any, would even be involved.

interesting,

"The technology already exists to prevent these tragedies and it should be standard equipment on every vehicle sold or leased in the US.”

so does ABS, side airbags, radar cruise control..... can we pass legislation to make that standard issue also?

This is what separates BMW's from Honda's. If you roll every possible safety feature into a Honda, it'll cost as much as a BMW. Where do we stop. If you want the added features, you have to pay for them. That's why a BMW cost more than a Honda or Mazda.

Can we please stay on topic? I've added the safety feature, lets move on.

Making it auto reverse can't be done without major changes to the cars wiring.
