For what it has to support it is probably OK, but OK isn't good enough so I have to agree with you. My pictures show what I am trying to do. I put vinyl peeled from a 3-ring binder over the foam core to mask the shiny black silicone. The vinyl looks worse.

I think I will follow your lead. What paint did you use to get the nice match?

Look at the ashtray straight on from the side and picture whatever angle you want. Use a dremel (that's a rotary tool you tory *****) and cut off everything below that line. You may need to glue side plates to rebuild the walls. I used bondo on the inside edge to give it a nice smooth radius that's easier to clean.

Sure it sounds easy and casual, but I'm an experienced fabricator and it took me over six hours to make this small part. Part of it is making stuff up as I go along but it still takes more time than you think. As a side note, here's an example of other stuff I've done. We fabricated the armor from scratch. You can see more examples at www.hi-impact.org
I have a spare ashtray now and I'll start modifying it soon. I'm going to buy a Dremel, some fiberglass filler and ABS sheet and tubes tomorrow and follow your recommendations. The main difference with my set-up will be that the two VDO gauges must be visible at all times, through the lid.

And I'm glad to resuscitate this great thread...

I like this idea very much. I like the idea of hiding my nitrous control panel and gauge behing the ashtray lid!

I might go with a CF panel for looks thou! I will keep this in mind when it comes time to install!
