Some questions... maybe canary will know the answers.
Will there be a different version for the Bose and non-Bose systems that allows to simply plug in the factory connectors and reuse the components other than the stock head unit?
What happens if you get a new head unit that has a good amp built-in? Can you use that in case you got the Bose system, or will it force you to retain the Bose amps? (Obviously, with the non-Bose system, built-in amp usage is a must, seeing that there is no exernal one in the stock setup.)
I suppose if you have a non-Bose system and an aftermarket amp hooked up to the speaker-level output of the head unit, then the new kit (and new head unit)will work fine since you could then still use the external amp... (that's what I have by the way, hence the interest)

 

I don't believe you will be able to retain your Bose speakers and amps with a new head unit due to impedance differences (I think the front speakers were like 1/2 ohm and the rears were 2 ohm) but I am not totally confident. Personally, I think it would be very wise to go through with an all-out audio replacement with this, especially if you have the Bose system. I think you run the risk of frying the head unit by not replacing the factory Bose speakers.

 

I agree that replacing the Bose speakers and amps is a good idea, but it is not necessarily something that everybody wants to do. For many people, the Bose sound (eventually complemented with a subwoofer using a separate amp) is good enough, but those folks still might want to have a nice double-DIN head unit with integrated GPS and DVD capabilities.
Besides, the way I undestand it, the idea is to make the kit "plug and play", not requiring any wiring being cut or other extensive overhaul. If the kit handles the connection to the Bose amps, then factory speaker impedance doesn't matter since those are hooked up to the Bose amps, not the new head unit.
That's why I thought there may be a need for different versions, one for Bose, the other for non-Bose.
People who want to replace the entire Bose stuff could get the non-Bose version and use whatever they want amp-wise, be it the integrated amp of the head unit or a separate aftermarket one.

Thank you Metra. I use and sell your products all day. Never had an issue with it. And it always saddened me to look at the Mazda6 kit we had....I was so envious.

 

This was asked before, my assumption would be that it will work, but what I'll do is ask them specifically and see what I get back. I don't think you'll have anything to worry about, but again, let me confirm that 100% from them. As far as getting one, these guys are huge, they sell kits worldwide, if nothing else I can help get you one through the shop who does all my work if you have trouble locating one locally.

I wonder if Crutchfield will do the 50% off adapter kit when buying a head unit $129 and higher offer, like they did for the Mazda6 kit, because that'll make it totally worth it to buy from them

not to take anything away any possible group buy offers from canary, just another possible vendor to purchase this kit once it is out is all

 

F series looks great, but I can't find an actual review out there that doesn't call it bug ridden. Sounds like it needs a couple rounds of firmware upgrades. We need a roundup post of all the best double din stereo units.

 

If you find out it works with the Auto climate controls I am in for any group buy you come with it.

 

Well hopefully when this kit releases the bugs on the unit will have been worked out. Cause I really don't like DVD based nav units.

yeah that's my only gripe with the D3/Z3/whatever. On the other hand, if you have an ipod it's a non-issue, or if you have factory nav lol
I like the idea of a double din/radio thread, I'd thought about it a while back just never had the time to do it justice. What I might do is combine this info and put together something on radios and do it all in one thread or something I'd include single din as well

 

Hey now dont hate on the d3's. I sell alot of them. I happened to luck into getting on for $300 so I couldn't pass up the deal on a d3, bluetooth adapter, and ipod adapter. Just cant wait for this metra product!

I agree on the DVD based nav systems. But luckily ill have a ipod/iphone to use while navigating (if I even use it since I have a garmin)

 

I love my D3 personally, probably the best bang for the buck deck out right now in my opinion. Sure there are better ones out there, but very few if any for that price

just got done sending a quick note for additional clarification regarding the european models and how this works with the blose, I'll post up the answers when I gots them.

 

Timing is always a funny thing, I was looking into double din units for the GF's car. Say what you want about Scion Tc's but I just love that double din opening and built in stereo cover, nice and discreet.

The Pioneer D3 made my short list too but the overall GUI and Navigation look and feel were a dealbreaker to me. Although it is the current value champ if you must have navigation, dvd, ipod, and bluetooth.

My current fave is the Kenwood DNX5120, it offers DVD, ipod, and most importantly Garmin GPS software. The Garmin GPS software has got to be the most easy to use. I've used Tom Tom, Garmin, and oem Honda/Acura GPS systems and hands down the Garmin wins in ease of use while driving (you're not supposed to but.....). bluetooth is also an option but puts it at price disadvantage against the Pioneer unit.

An indash PC would be nice too but requires quite a bit of investment both time and money to get the desired results, but it's the ultimate solution if you must have everything exactly your way. An Asus EEE mininotebook hooked up to a vga touchscreen would allow a portable solution. Add a GPS antenna, nav software, external 2.5" hd......

Oh the choices!

 

Interesting, I didn't go kenwood because I didn't like their gui/radio controls and actually liked the D3 better in that regard One thing that might get overlooked on the D3 when comparing it to similar models are the pre-outs as well, my radio absolutely has to have 3, a front,rear, and sub, when I was shopping around for radios the only one that had all 3 (and a REAL sub out)and navigation and a sub-600/700 dollar price tag was the D3, the next model up that filled all my "requirements" along with having navigation was another 2-300 bucks. The JVC avx-w810 (hope I got that right) has 3 pre-outs, an sd reader and a usb input......but no nav so I passed on it, despite it also having a larger screen to boot. I guess it really all depends on what you want the radio to do for you, and how much $ you have at the time, I would like to go to a carpc eventually, but for now I'm pretty stoked just having a nice dependable easy to use radio that does all I need it too (for now anyway....dang blu-ray lol
