Oh and one more thing for the naysayers who have to be right, how long did it take for the Corksport kit to come out? The Speedline kit has been around for over two years now.

The corksport kit has been out for over 2 years now aswell... You don't have a 7" screen blocking a pretty good portion of your view out of the windshield with it either...

I do like the one you have and I think it's a good idea, but it just looks out-of-place having the whole stock H/U installed along with a 2nd H/U on the top of the dash...

^^^^ He said out-of-place, I'm saying retarded.

In the end, can a mod or admin please clean up this thread, namely all of Davey's posts... If you had this brilliant idea all this time why didn't you start a thread so that people could come together and tell you how ridiculous it was there instead.

Can you get out this thread so it can stay relevant to a kit a lot of us are interested and eagerly anticipating please, thanks.

It's not like I had a competition class single din radio from my old car when I bought my 8 or anything Other than that you're on point. Except for limiting deck choices. Or compromising. I have nothing against the Corksport offering. Sounds great. However making it seem like its the only game in town is somewhat....shortsighted.

Sorry, you make an *** of yourself publicly when I point out an alternative, you get a public response.

By the way, if users of both kits decide to sell their car to someone, who's going to have an easier time making it stock again? Here's a hint: I didn't have to cut any wires on the factory radio/ac harness. Have a nice day.
OMG are you serious?

1- NO CUTTING OF WIRES FOR THIS KIT, you unplug your factory radio, set it aside, install dash kit WITH A HARNESS and you're done. If you want to sell your car later, just put the oem radio back in and call it a day, Jesus Christ dude, people have been doing that for DECADES, this is nothing new here. With your "solution" I not only have factory wiring in place, but now I'll have an extra set of wires running to everything in addition to my useless dormant dash piece with buttons on it that doesn't do anything now....awesome! So when I got to sell my car I'll have to pull all that out and replace the top piece, so which is easier again? There is not cutting or modifying with this, it's a direct replacement piece and will look factory, which, again, your option does not.

2- How the f do I alienate everyone w/o nav? If you have it or not doesn't matter in regards to this kit, it won't matter either way since this is going IN the dash not ON TOP OF IT. If anything, with this kit and an aftermarket radio that has nav included, I've just saved everyone a couple of grand and given them a better nav system to boot than oem, does your option do that? Do single din units come with nav?

3- I KNOW NOT EVERYONE WANTS A DOUBLE DIN RADIO, WHICH IS COOL, SINCE THIS KIT WILL BE OFFERED IN BOTH SINGLE AND DOUBLE DIN. IS YOURS?

NOWHERE have I said this is the only game in town dude, if you read my first post in this f-ing thread you will see I mention there are several options out there, I even mention yours for crying out loud.

you do realize this thread is not about the corksport kit right? It is about a TOTALLY NEW KIT that will come in 2 sizes, will be cheaper and have better fitment, and will be the easiest and most cost effective way to replace your factory radio, period.

so I'm the one making an *** of myself publicly? pffft, I'm the one who already mentioned all the alternatives in my first post in this thread dipshit, so how does that make me look like an ***? are we done here? can we move on now? k/thnx.

/end of hijack

back on topic please.

The din part just measures the height level of the player or the space it takes up. Single din would refer to like what you see there in Davey's pictures where there is basically one level... and the Double din is what we have factory in the rx8.

There's a more technical explanation out there but that's all it really means.

I can help you out no problem

single din

double din

As eddybear mentioned, it's basically an ISO standard size/form factor for radios, so whenever you hear "din" mentioned in regards to car audio it's referring to that.

And that would be different than the stock nav how? Other than the fact I'm 6' and look down over it anyway, I don't see it as a drawback. YMMV.

I do like the one you have and I think it's a good idea, but it just looks out-of-place having the whole stock H/U installed along with a 2nd H/U on the top of the dash...
It looked less out-of-place when I had a simple H/U instead of a motorized screen. Of course you can make the argument that anything with a motorized screen is going to look out of place. I would also point out that if you have a single din H/U, it looks better with the Speedline kit than any fit that replaces the stock radio as a single din H/U in that space looks.....empty. A single din with Speedline looks a lot more stock than it does with my motorized screen.

Bear in mind, I've had a top dash radio piece (not just this one) since 2005, and sometimes it is just easier to make something work with what you already have than do a complete overhaul and start from scratch. It's like using my Kenwood for a H/U. They're pretty good actually although some will argue I should have used Pioneer or Alpine. I stuck with Kenwood mostly because I used a Kenwood Sirius unit when I signed up for a lifetime subscription. I can change brands, but in doing so I use up one of the three unit transfers you're allowed associated with a lifetime subscription. Since they do make decent products, it makes sense to make what they have work with what I already have. Although I confess to missing time alignment on my new H/U.

All the power to you Davey for putting up with that solution. I showed the pic you posted of your install to my Fiancee and she threw up. But again whatever makes you happy dude.

I own the corksport kit, and will probably upgrade to the Metra kit since I get Metra products pretty much for free, that is assuming they do decide to go ahead with keeping the temperature/clock. I'd rather keep the corksport if the metra kit doesn't preserve the temperature and time.

Metra has assigned part numbers and is ready to roll out a dash kit option, but has not formally unvieled it yet. Guessing a month-ish.

And Davey, your dash kit looks like crap. Straight up. Your attitude matches it. But I've got a solution for you!!

Seconded! I'm anxiously awaiting pictures and the pricing details about this particular kit. I prefer the integrated look, but not at the price of the CorkSport kit.

If you're happy with your CorkSport kit, or the SpeedLine kit on eBay, great. Is it really necessary to argue about personal preference? Because that's all that's happening, and we're crapping-up this thread in the meantime. Opinions are going to differ. Get over it.

Okay folks, I'm back with an update, first off a few things:

- sorry Davey, I went off on you, probably shouldn't have, but your post irritated the crap out of me and I was in a horrible mood at the time to begin with, so my bad and good luck on your setup, even if some folks don't like it if you do more power to you.

- secondly, I'm super duper sorry to everyone I can't post all the info I'm receiving first hand from Metra, if I did we'd all be kept in the dark from here on out and a few people would probably end up unemployed, no dash kit is worth that in my opinion. Just like some folks on here probably have inside connections elsewhere (Mazda or whatever etc.) this is pretty much the same deal, just a different company.

now with all that out of the way...........

I got an update today from Metra and you guys are going to be EXTREMELY HAPPY when this comes out, no other kit is going to be able to do what this one will do, period. I should also mention it will be in the July issue of 12volt, as soon as I see the issue/blurb I'll post/scan/whatever.

So some good news! The list of features I saw today was nuts, wish I could share but it's all good

Thanks for the update, and the continued darkness.

I'm so excited for this kit. I've had a radio in the glovebox since August '04.
Just never wanted to spend big money to have it put in the center.
This will be awesome.

I've been looking for different CarPC options.

Quick question.
On the double-DIN option, can you install a single din and have the other spot covered?
I currently have a single-din radio, and will eventually go to a double-DIN.

To think, if someone would have told me a couple years ago...
There will be a option to replace your factory radio, and it will be better than anything else around, and it will cost less than a tank of gas, I would have said they were crazy.

I'm not sure on that one, my guess is it will be 2 seperate kits, one for single and one for double since they have 2 parts numbers released. It could also be that both kits are actually double din, but the single din model just comes with an extra snap in "pocket" to fill the space, but I'm only speculating on that and it's probably not likely.

Don't forget to keep an eye out for that July issue of 12volt, it looks like they'll have the full scoop on everything, with any luck I might be able to post it here before the article/whatever drops, but I doubt it since this is a pretty big deal etc.

They better hurry and release the kit then or a single gallon of gas will cost more, much less a tank full. Guess we can all sit in the driveway and listen to our radios.

Do you know if they are going to release a version for for the auto AC controls.
