Angry CD Player Stopped Working... AGAIN.

OK, so my CD player (2005 with the "non-sat-button HU" and Bose, 6 disc changer) has stopped working. The Mode switch on the steering wheel just goes from radio band to radio band, no EXT or CD. Pushing the CD button on the HU does nothing either.

The radio plays fine, but no CD and no EXT to use my Audio Link for iPod or XM. Could the Audio Link be the problem? I have new-enough HU firmware, and the Audio Link has worked perfectly for months.

BTW, Should I pull all that stuff out before bringing it in for warranty service?

Last time this thing died, it got a CD jammed in it. I didn't have an Audio Link then, so I never checked if it would switch to EXT or not. The dealer replaced it (and no, I never got my jammed discs mailed back). This time, it just happened. I went to turn on the HU, and... just radio. I haven't put a disc in or out in 3 or 4 days.

(At the same time, he replaced the brake pads, which started squealing again within a few hundred miles. Not having much luck with these two problems, and I still only have 9500 miles on the car. Sigh.)

If anyone has troubleshooting ideas, lemme know, I'll grab the screwdriver and get hunting.

Thanks!

Jer

Same thing happened to me just today. Up until now, I've had ZERO problems with anything on the car, but now the CD button will not change modes. The TAPE/MD button also will not change modes. Radio works just fine. I have a couple CDs in the changer right now, but I'm more concerned that I too have the AudioLink unit plugged in. I hope there are no long-term issues developing with these. It might just be a matter of unplugging the wire from the CD changer port and reconnecting... but who wants to take their radio out again just to find out? Of course I will if I have to, but it'd make me think twice about continuing to use it.

Just like Jer mentioned above, if anyone has some tips, please let us know!

Thanks,

Resetting the audio system

I've just had the same problem It had been a few days of heat wave when I drove my car in the morning and both the CD player and audiolink was working fine. When I got back into the car the outside temp was 41degC and the CD player button didn't respond, nor did DISP. I couldn't change into it with Mode on the steering wheel either. Waiting for the day to cool down didn't make a difference.

So I forced a reset by removing the BTN fuse (in the engine bay) for 30sec (I held the brake pedal down for 30sec - I don't know if this was necessary but read to do it in a thread somewhere else). switched the car to ACC on. This worked to reset the Audio system. Radio presents resetted and importantly, the CD and audiolink EX was working again.

[saved me having to disconnect the battery but if the above didn't work for you try disconnecting the battery]
[I also tried removing the ACC fuse which was the most sensible but it didn't work]

After resetting / replacing the fuse / reconnecting the battery, remember to
1. re-enable the auto power window full raise and lower
2. restore DSC (DSC OFF will be flashing and TCS/DSC inidicator is lit)

start the car
lower the window fully
raise the window full and keep the button up for 2 sec more after the window is closed.
turn the steering wheel completely to the right then completely left
verify the DSC OFF inidcator turns off
let the car warm up to prevent flooding
turn the ignition switch to off then on
Verify that the TCS/DSC indicator is off

I've had to reset my DSC dozens of times.. never once have I heard of rolling the window up and down.. maybe thats some super 1337 trick that I don't know of, but I'm certain it isn't necessary.

I had the same problem again 5 years later.
The audio system wouldn't switch to CD/Ex.
So I googled for an answer, saw this post, took the fuse out but didn't step on the brake this time and voila. The audiolink and CD was working again.
I tried the auto window without rolling it down all the way but it wasn't working.
I had to roll the window all the way down and up and then it would work.
Then I looked up who wrote the solution and saw that it was me!!

Just started having this issue. Tried pulling the 2 audio fuses in the cabin, no luck. will give that BTN fuse a shot next time I go out.

First I ever hear of those window instructions...

I opened up the head unit after 8 months or so of not having anything cd related working....
Removed the changer part(remove all red screws), had a poke around and noticed a gap between the top 2 drawers of the changer.
Long story short, poked a screw driver in from the top and aligned the cd's and the deck freed off and i was able to spring the changer deck up and down whereas before there was no movement. Reinstalled and all is working, turns out one of the cd's had been snapped in situ and was jamming it up. I have music again. I only tried this because my heater had locked on at 6 and while i was in trying the repair it i thought i'd have a go at the changer!! Changer works. But alas my heater board differs from that in the diy and even after resoldering all accessible joints its still stuck on 6, but hey 50/50 and summers on its way. The music will do for now!!
Its a uk spec 05 231 6 speed btw!

Hey Timbervolt,

I'm having the same problem with my CD button.
Will try the BTN fuse tonight.

When you say remove it for 30 seconds, do you do this first then turn the ACC on while the fuse is out to reset it?
Or do you just remove it for 30 seconds, then replace it, then turn the ACC on?

Just wanted to get the steps correct before I have a crack at it.

So I bought a a GROM audio device so that I could listen to my phone through USB or Bluetooth. So I hooked it up and unfortunately, it would not fully work. Now I think that it has to do with issues on the actual head unit itself. Even before installing it, the display wouldn't show the version number (which was needed to check for compatibility for the device). While I had the head unit pulled out, I did the reset, pulled the fuse, disconnected the battery, reset DSC all that stuff and it still wouldn't work. It would work on and off, I would have to take the key out entirely and put it back in. But something in the display is off because when I had my phone plugged into the module the display would jump around for example when showing the track number or track time. At this point I've just about had it and I think I'm gonna shell out the money and put an aftermarket head unit. Anyone having a similar issue or maybe can help me?

Could you please clarify what ACC is? Im having the cd player/EXT no worky issue too. After pulling the BTN fuse, the cd player worked for a short period (1 drive), then reverted back to being a POS.

Thanks a bunch for this post man!

So this happened to me this morning. The iPod link wasnt working and when i would switch to CD mode it would switch but nothing would happen. Tried ejecting a cd and it went to showing the 1-6 cd numbers and flashing the one to eject but it wouldnt eject. would just keep flashing and when i would hit the CD button again, it would switch to EX without actually playing anything from my iphone and then would switch back to the "ejecting cd screen" while not ejecting anything.

I tried turning the car off and back on (immediately thought without waiting a bit as i was trying this at a red light lol) a few times and did nothing for me.

Came to work, read this thread, went back after an hour of car being parked/off to try this procedure but when i turned the car on, everything was working again like magic! Remember i didnt disconnect the battery or anything. Just turned the car off normally, went to work, went back after an hour and it was working.

But i did the procedure just to be doubly sure. Turned car off, took the BTN fuse out, waited a minute, put the BTN back in, turned the car to ACC and everything was working. Had to roll down the window all the way and back up while holding it a few extra seconds to enable the auto window. Also had to turn the wheel all the way to the right and left, turn the car back off and on to make sure my traction control light was off. All as Timbervolt had instructed.

Havnt driven around to see if the problem comes back or not but for now i tried all functions a few times (including changing cds) and all works.

One possibility of what could be causeing this at least in my case is that i think my iphone cable might be faulty. Sometimes when my iphone is connected (playing music) i move it around and it disconnects. So that could be a possibility of what is causing my issue.

Anyway, just wanted to say a huge thanks to Timbervolt and everyone else writing up here.

Hope it doesnt come back (at least not very soon)

Just an update. My problem came back almost right away after i plugged in my iphone and moved it around. Im almost sure that the issue is that the cable that connects to my iphone is broken and is causing this issue.

I tested it this morning by securely putting my iphone where it wouldnt move at all and therefor the cable wouldnt move at all. everything worked perfectly fine for the hour that i drove.

So you may be having a similar issue which is not the car usnit, its a short in the wire that connects your iphone to the car unit

After YEARS of not having the ability to play CD's, I stumble across this thread, and I'll be damned if it didn't work!

Thank you!

I have a c9pc v6 600 pioneer dvd
For a long time i was unable to switch it on. Turns out theres a small trigger underneath hdd slot which turns it on. My lid was broken so it was not pressing it.

Sorry to necro a thread this old, but it was the closest thing I could find to my issue and being a new member with a low post count, it was either this or wait for my own new thread to get noticed and moved, so here we are...

I have a GROM bluetooth adapter installed in my 2005. It was there when I got the car and it's worked fine so far up until a couple days ago. Now, when I hit the cd button nothing changes. The only mode I get is radio, either by the buttons on the head unit or steering wheel mode button. Rather than messing with fuses or anything else, I just went with the nuke option and disconnected the battery cable to rule out anything else. My presets, clock, and basically everything else in the car reset, so we're good there, but still no other modes. Anyone have any ideas on what I can do? I've checked the GROM unit and the red light is lit on the board. I'm not sure which GROM it is, being that it has no labels. They came off with the duct tape the PO wrapped everything in. The only reason I even know it's a GROM unit is the bluetooth name that comes up...plus the reset procedure so that I could pair it to my phone matched GROM's procedures. That took a while to figure out, considering when I bought the car I didn't even know it existed, much less who made it.

I don't think there are any CDs jammed in the changer, but who knows? I don't imagine that would be what's causing me problems, but you guys know more about this than I do. Any suggestions?
