I had this happen last week after I pulled the HU to install an FM Modulator for a Sirius radio. All of a sudden I had NO DISPLAY at all. After searching here I thought my option was only to go to the dealer for an expensive repair. Instead I just took the positive cable off of the battery, waited a few minutes, put it back on and everything is functioning again (had to reset the time and radio presets) like it should be. Not saying this will work for you and it does not address the reason for the blinking (i think) but hopefully it puts everything back to normal.
