Avital Security System
Anyone know anything about Avital security systems? i was looking at them today and was told they could install the Avistart 2-way 4400 security system with proximity detection and without remote start for $400. Is anyone familiar with this? Is this a good deal?

I would highly recommend that you look at the Compustar 2w8000fma alarm or 2w8000fmas alarm / starter + the PATS4 to bypass the transponder to allow the remote start. (and yes it will work in a manual transmission safely). Compustar has now gone 5th generation on their 2 way lcd systems, most other companies pale by comparison. Range is an unparalled 5000 ft. I have actually exceeded that.

I still like Clifford as my choice for alarms. I getting the Clifford G5 Advantguard installed for $600(alarm & installation, retail is about $750 just for the alarm) with my audio system but not going to have the remote start installed because of the stories I've heard about remote start with maunel transmission.

Here is how to dispel the myth about the stories. Start with a alarm RS that is designed to work with a manual transmission. I'll pick on the compustar as I have dealt all brands in the last 18 years and it is by far and away the superior remote start system (we Canadian know a thing or two about the cold I guess.) On a remote start a certain sequence of events must be followed in order to remote start a manual trasmission. The compustar brains all come with a jumper wire that is set from the factory for a manual transmission, it must be cut in order to allow it to work in a vehicle with an automatic transmission.
There are numberous wires that must be connected up. These include the ignition wire, the doorpin wire, the brake wire and the park brake wire. Here is how the system works, it is called ready mode. The vehicle must be running, place the tranny in neutral. Put you foot on the brake and hold it. Pull the park brake on and leave on. Take your foot off of the brake pedal. Remove keys from ignition - car stays running. Open car door and exit vehicle. Close the door - upon the door closing the engine will turn off. You have safely entered ready mode. If you make a mistake on any 1 of the above steps, ready mode will not be engaged. If you can exit the vehicle with the engine running, it is obviousely safe to remote start it as well.
Now the only exception to this is the bonehead clause. The bonehead clause is self explanatory. If your grass is as high as the fence you might be a redneck, oops wrong story..... if you leave someone in the car and they reach over and put the transmission into gear, it will remote start in gear. If you leave the windows down and put the vehicle into gear, it will remote start in gear. Now in either case you the user are the bonehead for knowingly bypassing the 4 safety steps to ensure a safe remote start.
The clifford G5 is a great alarm system, nic to see that they finally have two remotes.

The new rs / alarms may not be on the site yet. The main brains that Compustar uses has not changed in over 5 years now, minor software uprgrades only, goes to show how sound the technology they use really is.
