the array aerial (antenna) is seperate from the GPS antenna...the array antenna is connected by one simply cable that plugs into the back of the HU

the GPS antenna is located in rear facial (above the pass through) and is an independent antenna (I've taken this apart)

which is goood for you guys

I know this is a late post, but if you're still have puzzling over installing the Nav sys, you might want to call Mazmart (1 800 221 5156 ). I called them yesterday to discussl ocating and installing the leather heated seats from a GT pkg. We got into a discussion about whether my car would be prewired for them, and he told me about the Nav systems he's installed (with "miles of harnesses" which are not prewired in non-Nav units). I think the guy's name was Hal or Howard - started with an H. Anyway, he was very knowledgable and helpful. You might want to give him a ring if you're stuck.

my guess is he has never installed one but he sure has torn one down before...many times!

I believe our RX8 XTC purchased from Mazmart too so he is golden

Well, I certainly admire the guy's willingness to put so much work into adding the OEM nav aftermarket. That's a pretty huge job. It's too bad the NAV system is such a POS, and we are all running around with 3-year-old maps. Give it a couple more years, and we'll probably be posting pics of how to get rid of the damned thing. Guess you can tell I'm still pissed at Mazda and Navteq, huh?

The number two reason that I didn't go with the oem (after the price). I called the Navteq people before buying the 8 and they said that the car mfgs used oem versions of their maps (probably bs) and any updates would be the responsibility of the car mfg.

Essentially, Navteq sublicenses their technology to the car mfgs and the car mfg determines when or if the software gets updated and at what cost. I've been in the computer business too long to get involved in sublicensed software.

That's the exact opposite of what I was told by Mazda service. They said they were trained at a recent service training session to provide Navteq contact info, because all upgrades and firmware updates are to be performed through Navteq.

Well, it is pretty obvious that every party is going to point their finger to the other one regarding upgrades and maintenance... easiest way to do nothing and shovel the work over to the other side.

So either way, have you seen anyone get an updated map for the oem unit from either Mazda or Navteq? I can go to the Garmin website and download updates for a year. If I don't like their maps there are other suppliers that offer compatible maps.

No map exists, and I realize that will only be available thru Navteq (if they ever produce another one). I'm talking about the firmware upgrade (the operating system software). That also is no longer available for update thru Mazda. What the service rep told me is that some dealerships had tried to updae the firmware and messed up the Nav system, so Mazda decided to put the liability on the customer. Thanks a lot, Mazda. BTW, from what I understand, an update requires about 2 brain cells to perform sucessfully, so I guess some service techs are 1 short.

If the dealers had a later map disc, why wouldn't they give it to you?
