Aftermarket Alarm with GPS Tracking

I'm investigating different aftermaket alarms to install in my 8 that provide GPS tracking. Wasn't comfortable with Lojack considering that you need to depend on the PDs to have equipment that can track a Lojack signal.

1) Anyone installed an aftermarket alarm with GPS tracking from say Viper, Clifford etc.?
2) Does that affect the NAV system in any way?
3) Considering that the 8 comes with the capability of not starting unless using the coded key, how would an aftermarket alarm affect that?
4) Would adding additional modules for the windows, trunk, sunroof etc. affect the stock alarm too?
5) How does this affect the factory car warranty?

I tried searching the forums and only found this thread.

Thanks in advance,
Jeff

Re: Aftermarket Alarm with GPS Tracking

Hey there.
I've researched this quite extensively. There's a guy around here, his handle is mdw3333, I believe who runs a shop that does this stuff too. My comments are below in the quote. Good luck!

1) Anyone installed an aftermarket alarm with GPS tracking from say Viper, Clifford etc.? - DEI makes a great system with 2 way GPS or commands (remote unlock, start, etc. from Internet or phone...). That's the one that gets the most face time. I believe it's marketed as the Viper GPS Tracking System. The extra command stuff has a monthly fee.
2) Does that affect the NAV system in any way? - Nope. It's a completely separate module with its own GPS antenna and unit.
3) Considering that the 8 comes with the capability of not starting unless using the coded key, how would an aftermarket alarm affect that? - This is always an issue. Normally, you bypass this with a hidden transponder bypass. However, there isn't one compatible with the RX-8 yet (unless my info's out of date, which it could be). So, you'd have to leave the valet key in the car. This is still relatively safe, since the alarm now runs the immobilizer system. If the thief is savvy enough to rehack the wiring to bypass, it's likely that the Mazda Immobilizer wouldn't stop him either, so...
4) Would adding additional modules for the windows, trunk, sunroof etc. affect the stock alarm too? - You can't add those modules to the stock alarm. However, nearly any alarm can now be wired to control those, especially since DEI just released their newest window module and channel expanders to work with the RX-8!
5) How does this affect the factory car warranty? - Do a web search on Magnuson-Moss (I think). Dealers don't "like" you to aftermarket your cars. However, they can't deny you warranty service, unless they prove that your mod specifically caused the problem. This thread is helpful: https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...t=warranty+law

You're welcome!

That's what this forum is for. You wouldn't even believe how much time and money (aggravation, grey hairs, etc.) I saved thanks to the good people around here!

Hey huhsler! Are you aware if window, sunroof and trunk modules exist for the Viper 791VX or the Clifford Matrix 3.5? I went to a authorized installer and they only found the trunk module for the Viper. Just thought I'd put it out here in the forum.

Yes. If I'm not mistaken, both the Viper and Matrix have the trunk module included. The windows and sunroof are a bit trickier, due to a Ford-designed window motor issue.

I just posted this a little ways back, but a simple (albeit expensive) option is to get sets of Audiovox AU-93 window modules. They cost roughly 2-4 times as much as the DEI 2-way window module, but work with both windows and sunroof on the RX-8. They are also compatible with any DEI alarm. I just had my windows done for mine and 2 modules were $150 (ouch). Good luck!

So for both windows and the sunroof it could come to anything between $200-$300?? Wonder if I got that installed by a DEI installer, whether that would be covered under the lifetime labor warranty?

Who knows? Maybe other shops have it for cheaper. Also, price depends on whether you want open AND close. Maybe add tilt too? ;-)

Hmmmm...good question. My installer told me that it would be covered by his shop. Does that mean warranty? I guess I'll have to make some calls again.
